In the auto position the front axle will engage but the transfer case stays in 2wd until slip is detected That being said the noise could still be coming from any of the 4wd components I think. Have you checked fluids and checked for grease fittings on the driveshaft?

GM and Ranger have the highest tow capacity. GM twins are 21 gal. EDIT: Frontier is 21 gal. The Colorado diesel will allegedly get almost 30 mpg empty and 20 towing. I considered it for a minute but decided against for reliability issues. Mostly sensors and emissions crap.

I’ve had a couple types of all terrain tires and for on road winter travel I’ve not been impressed. I haven’t found they have any advantage over a good all season highway tire. Here in MN I now run dedicated snow tires because it stays cold for months on end.

Does the torque converter lock up in that auto? I think that can make a big difference.
