Suitability of modding hard-sided popups for offroad use

You dont want to pull much with an impala, I dont care what people say. Even of it says 3 k trailer weight, cut that in half. That goes for pretty much any towing vehicle, sure for short distance the tow weight is fine, but for any kind of trip dont do it. The only people more proud of their a...

Okay only very minor updates. Sink, faucet, water tank, water heater ( went with instant ), and water pump ordered. I installed the track for the led tape light inside so no more looking like xmas lights. I also wired in the shore power plug, wired the inside 120 volt plugs, and cut in and...

    Here we go again...

Opp if I was dragging trees, and laying it in to hills like the vid I posted I would go wood. Heck If I was really fearing it, I would go metal frame with ACM put on with vhb tape. That way I could just pull and replace skins as needed. I really thought about going that way but then realized I...

    Here we go again...

Tony you know how my camper is. you know its foam and fiberglass skins. And I think you miss read my post., ( edit I just edited my post above for clarity ) if I was bouncing off of trees and having the risk of it landing on its side I would do wood with a hand laid fiberglass skin. I would not...

    lifting the tent rack questions

They are simply a motor that you reverse the wires to go the other way. Looks like his switch is a maintained contact and the actuator has limits switches built in ( they all do I think ). The coiled wire is probably his lights, you can see the motor down at the bottom if you know what your...

    Here we go again...

I am anti wood, unless wrapped completely in fiber glass, like 360 degrees, bottom too. It also depends what your using it for, if serious off road, like fall on its side, bounce of trees off road that entirely different than just muddy roads. I like the foam panel with fiberglass skin method...

Tradgrans..trailer build. Its now is a pop top, We have a tent and AC

Edges and front slope of the pop top are skinned, Now I am debating just using al angle to finish it off vs glassing and filing. If I did aluminum I would be done the roof in an hour or so, vs probably 6 to 10 hours of glassing and sanding filler, not including waiting a day for the epoxy to...

    lifting the tent rack questions

You dont really need the xylene it will just make it go on "wetter" but will dry out to more a dry film as you know. I would go lighter on the paraffin oil at first, once its melted dip a butter knife in it and let it cool and see how it is. If its dryer than you want add more paraffin, but the...

Tradgrans..trailer build. Its now is a pop top, We have a tent and AC

Minor updates, the roof panel is trimmed to final shape, and the front edge is cut to flow in to the front fixed sloped roof section. There are two pics below that I hope give a good idea of how the lifting roof mates with the sloped roof, It still needs to have skin applied and be glassed in...

A quick Aerodynamics question and Weight study of my DIY camper

The really funny thing about the aero designs from the 50 and 60's are most of them where wrong. The designers made what they thought would be nice and slippery thru the air, but they made stuff that had weird results when tested in modern wind tunnels. A modern toyota camary is more aerodynamic...

A quick Aerodynamics question and Weight study of my DIY camper

John just go away. I cant believe I am saying this, he will be towing a boat as well as the driving the truck with the camper on top. So he would be limiting his speed any way. You do realize most highways even tractor trailers are doing 70, try driving rte 81 in Virginia, up and down the...

Tradgrans..trailer build. Its now is a pop top, We have a tent and AC

Okay I started the kitchen pull out. The "stove" is a blackstone griddle, I went back and forth on this. But I decided for the way I cook while camping it makes more sense, and I have a single burner butane stove I really like, I will just bring it for when I want a stove burner. I will have...

Tradgrans..trailer build. Its now is a pop top, We have a tent and AC

God you can see how bad I need to sand and round the edge of the top of the wall. it looks like hell, well so does the trim job on the panel on the roof. It will get better as I can continue fairing it out.
