    Weak V6 a dealbreaker?

I've found the 3.5L / 4.90 / 4 speed AT combination to be plenty of power. My buddy who daily drives a Porsche 911 drove a 2001 Gen3 on test drive last week, first time driving a Monty, and he thought the pick up was great getting on the freeway, etc. and was really surprised. I've got...

SONICMASD's 98 Montero LS Build & Adventure Thread: Black Betty

Tired of this forum's glitchy image uploader so from here on out I'm switching to Flickr - so the pics will work for non-EXPOforum members from this point on. 7/14/17: Woke up and headed to Mesa Verde NP. We didn't get up that early and only got to the tour ticket desk at around 10:30 but we...

Damn, those CF accents are looking really sharp. On the emblem, bumper, and did you put it on the plate around the 3 gauge cluster too!? Also, those wheels came out real nice! Can't wait to see a full profile shot of the rig. I second the excellent documentation of part numbers on here, it's...

7/13/17: We finally hit the road after spending 3 or 4 days in Flagstaff. Our friends in Flagstaff convinced us to head to Colorado because they were heading to Telluride in a week in their own Japanese SUV towing a vintage camper and we all thought it would be cool to meet up. First stop...

7/9/17: I forgot to mention this in one of the previous posts but just before heading out on the road trip I got an OBDII monitor. Using the existing cheap tablet and mounts that I've already covered in a previous post, I bought OBDLink off Amazon. It's a simple OBDII dongle that communicates...

The Montero is looking good, can't wait to see more pics! It makes me all warm and fuzzy inside that we have this community of dedicated Monty preservers.

I think I'm going to hold on to it and try welding some washers to take up the slack and do some tests with the camper. But the good news is the extension was only like $16 at Harbor Freight whereas the major brands want multiple times that!

7/10/17: We hit the road that morning with the goal of getting to southern Utah for the night. Everything was going fine around town but then, not long after getting out of the Phoenix area heading north on the I-17 the camper starts swaying a lot. For the next 3 hours we experienced the most...

Sorry for the long delay John! Good points on the Premium vs Regular discussion. I've decided that you're right and the gains are just not worth it. But I did notice that when pulling a camper up a steep grade the premium gas definitely helps and though it doesn't help 20% I'll take an extra 5%...

PS - the old Continental timing belt that came out of the engine looked great and would have definitely lasted another 13k and the Tensioner was the OEM unit too. Oh well, I still had a lot more peace of mind as we set off with the coolant drips and crank sensor and drive belts replaced.

So then I spent like all of June and early July working on the new to us 1965 Aristocrat Lo-Liner Travelier Camper! I did a ton of stuff on this thing to get it ready for our upcoming trip. I put in a new water system (tank, lines, faucet), sealed all the exterior joints and seams to keep the...

It's been awhile, let's get this thread caught up to real life. 4/16/17: Replaced the EGR since the P0400 kept coming back after resetting. Easiest fix ever. Seriously, easier than replacing light bulbs. 6/3/17: My wife and I have been talking about going on another epic American Road Trip...

I think it's pretty cool, I've been debating the same mod as well. I know for sure that I'm going to do the recovery/tow points but have been debating on the skid plates for over a year. My concern was probably the same as yours, thinking they would be too in your face in red but you're right...

5/29/17: Quick interior updates to my device mounting struggles. 1. I removed the original magnetic ball mount because it wasn't strong enough on its own to hold my 7" navigation tablet in place firmly. Instead, I bought a 2 pack of this magnetic mount off Amazon. This kind of magnetic mount...

5/27/17 - 5/28/17: Went up to Heber and stayed at a friend's cabin and then spent the next day driving all around the Mogollon Rim. We didn't have a plan or route and just had fun exploring Forest Roads all over the place for hours. I kept Betty in AWD and spent most of the day as navigator, so...

Thanks for the tip, glad to hear you are liking your RAM set up. I actually gave that chair rail mount a try but found it to be in the way too much of my arm and the shifters. I'll post my current set up soon, I'm enjoying it so far and think it might be here to stay.

05/13/17 - Took the Monty up to Sedona for a night of camping with my wife and we dragged my parents along for their first time camping, ever. We took them on the Broken Arrow trail and then a small hike. They had an awesome time and the next day we went and had Mother's Day Brunch in Sedona...

Very cool roof rack, thanks for the tips. My only concern, is I thought I read that the stock roof rack is only rated by Mitsu for 75lbs so you might want to be careful about overloading it past that point. I think that's why most guys are taking the stock rails off, and adding perpendicular...
