SONICMASD's 98 Montero LS Build & Adventure Thread: Black Betty

11/25/18: Today's Agenda: Wheelin. I had a bunch of trails that I wanted to hit and really only one day to do them in. My plan was to do Hell's Revenge first and then a second one in the afternoon. It was a full car load; aside from my wife who is pretty used to 4x4ing, I had 3 family...

That's funny, looks like it but no, I don't know what is in that last pic. Good eye though.

GEN 3 Roof Rack & RTT

Check your owner's manual or the roof rack on the Gen3 for a weight rating. The Gen 2 had a max load of 100lbs so unless Mitsu beefed up the rack on the Gen 3 I don't think it would work.

11/22/17: We left PHX for Moab and made it up to Valley of the Gods for the night. I was tired and anxious to get into camp and was driving faster than I should have. Right as we were pulling into a camp spot, the propane tanks flew off the camper tongue, broke off, and got pinned under the...

SONICMASD's 98 Montero LS Build & Adventure Thread: Black Betty

I've been slacking on posting lately, let's try and get this thread caught up. 11/21/17: I'm doing final preparations the night before we leave to go spend Thanksgiving camping in Moab and I decide to take a look at why the camper brake lights haven't been working. People have been telling me...

If the connectors have gray trim then they are for the heated seat switches and if they are smaller and all black then that is where the seat wiring harness plugs in.

Unfortunately, it was also really bad and I didn't save it.

    Project: Outlaw III

Yes, I'd definitely go with the dealer parts on that job. I believe the plugs are iridium and good for 100k.

    18. To remove the cover all the way - Push the headrest release button and remove the headrest. If you look inside the seat back, you'll notice that the plastic headrest mounts are held in place with a built in spring design. The ends need to be pushed together so that the mounts can be pulled...

I just added this build thread to the ADD forum as well, but it just links back to hear for anything posted before this date. I'll probably post in both forums for awhile with major mods since it only takes a couple extra seconds. 11/19/17: New Mod done! This one has been in the works for...

The tires on my "new to me" 1995 Montero

Check out the Falken ATW3 - Good price and great all terrain, even in snow.

    Torsion bars

From what I've heard, OME torsion bars are as good as it gets for Monteros. I have them on my rig but I can't say how they compare to your oem ones because they were already on my vehicle when I bought it so I wasn't able to feel a before and after. If I needed Torsion Bars, I'd jump on the $200...

    ImNoSaint's 2.5 Thread

Ps- seeing as you’re always finding neat hardware hacks I thought I would pass along a new gadget made by a business contact of mine and local to you, SLC company: https://www.griplockties.com Rubber coated zip ties so they won’t slide out of place. Interesting idea. Sent from my iPhone using...

Thanks my man! I went through Montrose on this trip to get to Black Canyon NP, and stopped over at Murdochs to buy a new trailer caster after having to replace the jack that same day in Delta.

    My Montero on Natgeo

I remember when this went down Toasty! Very cool to see the video now, especially as a Portuguese speaker. Even without the funny youtube closed captioning, this guy is hilarious. Like when he is talking about the Mountain Goats he keeps saying "these beasts!"

11/12/17: I picked up a Garvin Wilderness Roof Rack for a Jeep Liberty on OfferUp a few days prior, got inspiration from Imnosaint's roof rack hack post, ordered the same Surco Gutter Mounts, and got down to it. IMG_8957 The Jeep Liberty rack attached to the stock roof rails with two big...

9/30/17: Rock sliders are cool. But one thing that has always been driving me nuts about mine is that the paint on the support beams is always chipped off by rocks/gravel coming off the tires. IMG_8516 I know that rust is not really anything to worry about here in dry Phoenix, but it looks a...

7/29/17: Back to building! I hit up the junkyard because the amount of play in my steering wheel has bugged me from day 1. Not knowing any better (this was in the pre-A.D.D. days so it was not common knowledge) I threw away my stock Idler Arm when I replaced it and the tie rods with MOOG when I...
