2003 Montero Limited - Lawrence of Arizona

Before I could begin the head to head test, I needed to take care of the tire rubbing. 35s are too big for my kind of overlanding. I think the tradeoff in speed, reliability, mpgs, stability, and handling isn't worth it for the extra 1" of clearance. So I started researching my options and...

2003 Montero Limited - Lawrence of Arizona

How to begin? Everyone knows I love my 98 Montero, AKA Black Betty. I never even dreamed about another Montero because I love how capable the Gen 2.5 is but over our 16,000 adventure miles together I've been wanting a more comfortable vehicle in terms of on and off road ride quality and steering...

    Rambo Penguin's Gen 3 Build!

Regarding the headlight work: When you heated it up in the oven to help loosen the factory gasket seal, what temp and how long in the oven and then how did you reseal it when you were done?

    Rambo Penguin's Gen 3 Build!

This is amazing! Like BOOM and we're deep into a build out of nowhere! Great stuff, I can tell you've been studying and learning a lot. I just got a Gen3 last week and this is some great inspiration for me, especially the roof rack and dual battery system tips. Welcome to the Montero world...

Looking for Tablet Dash Mount Thread

Oh PS - Forget about the RAM suction cup mounts. They will hold the device nicely at eye level below your rear view mirror but they fall off all the time. I change mine out every 3 months here in Phoenix and they still fall off all the time - they can't handle extreme temperatures.

Looking for Tablet Dash Mount Thread

I'm not sure what Gen you have, but you can check out my build thread for how I did my tablet mounts. I used the magnetic mounts and they are the cheapest, quickest, but imo best way to do it on a Gen 2 / 2.5. I work at a RAM Distributor and have access to thousands of RAM items so I've spent...

SONICMASD's 98 Montero LS Build & Adventure Thread: Black Betty

2/27/18: Staying on the whole safety and mounting stuff thing. I mounted a fire extinguisher onto the rear pillar on the driver side using 3 self tapping metal screws. I just used the cheap plastic mount/bracket the extinguisher came with. I hope it holds up on bumpy dirt roads. If not, I...

SONICMASD's 98 Montero LS Build & Adventure Thread: Black Betty

2/27/18: I've been working on this mod for a bit now and just finished it up today. Despite having a complete factory tool kit, I've never used it because I carry a much bigger box of tools. So I started thinking about other uses for that area. A first aid kit was a must and I didn't know what...

SONICMASD's 98 Montero LS Build & Adventure Thread: Black Betty

2/17/18: When I first got Betty I did the Thermostat, Radiator Hoses, and Coolant but I didn't know the importance of using the OEM thermostat on Monteros. I installed a Stant fail-safe thermostat and it worked OK but despite replacing almost every cooling component the system was still giving...

    New 1998 Winter Package

Congrats, that's a great ultra low mileage find, did you run the Carfax?! Looks like a great candidate for a Monstaliner paint job :-)

lunchbox-ers any opinions experiences with the many brands?

I had a Detroit in my front axle and that is supposed to be the best auto locker you can get (now discontinued for the Montero) and I couldn't stand it. Yes, it provided amazing traction during difficult obstacles but it was squirrely all the time outside of that. It was always pulling you in...

SONICMASD's 98 Montero LS Build & Adventure Thread: Black Betty

2/11/18: For some reason, after Moab and the pit of doom incident my steering was back pulsing. I've had belt sequel since the timing belt and drive belt change done a few thousand miles ago and decided to address these issues. The PS reservoir was really really low. I haven't noticed any leaks...

I'm the dumb one, montero wheels and what won't fit

You're right, it is a challenge to find wheels on craigslist that will fit Monteros. Yes, the main reason why is because of the centerbore being 108mm 4.25". As IncorporatedX said, the easiest way to find wheels is by searching for Chevy Wheels or Chevy Rims or Chevy 6 lug, etc. because lots of...

SONICMASD's 98 Montero LS Build & Adventure Thread: Black Betty

1/20/18: I got the new ADD Transmission Skid. It's a beautiful and strong piece of armor. To install, you use the existing rear mounts of the front diff skid plate and the rear of the tranny skid bolts on the passenger side to two existing mounts on the cross member. Then you have the option...

SONICMASD's 98 Montero LS Build & Adventure Thread: Black Betty

1/18/18: I've been working on this mod off and on for awhile now and finally finished it up. My friend had a bunch of reflective bubble insulation scraps that he was going to throw out but that stuff is expensive! So I took it and by joining a few pieces together with hvac foil tape I was able...
