Pulling the Engine - Torque Converter first, why?

I'm not 100 percent sure that dropping the diff would give you access to the oil pan. The entire sub frame may be in the way still. I'm pulling my diff this weekend and will see what it looks like.

Why does my gen 3 feel like crap on highway?

I have AT3s on mine and they are LOUD. Disappointing because I like the tires performance otherwise. +1 on getting an alignment. It really is impossible to tell what could be worn unless its on a rack. I had mine aligned a while ago and the tech said the inner tie rods were bad. I...

is his head in the sand?

Well I got my Gen 3 with 98k in damn near perfect condition for 6500. I gueantee you nothing on that list will come close. Front and rear arbs, Tcase gears, etc and Im still several k under what a stock 200k mile 100 LC costs. And I guess I don't know Mercedes but again I'm sure bumpers, lifts...

is his head in the sand?

Good. I like when stuff like this comes out. Placing the montero at #1 would drive up the price of used vehicles:whistle: I did find it funny Mercedes and Landrover were on the list. I can't imagine what after market parts for those cost. More than a whole montero, and probably custom in most...

    For sale: gen 3 LSD

Call around to some shops that set up differentials. I bet for a carrier change it would be $150-250. Also I should mention that with a shim kit setting the back lash is pretty easy, however you will need to make a differential case spreader. Pretty basic if you have a welder but on the 9.5...

    For sale: gen 3 LSD

No i have never ran it. It was in the diff I purchased to get 4.9 gears. No indication anything was wrong with the diff. Gears, bearings, etc all looked good. To set it up you would only need to adjust back lash. That would take ordering the shim kit from Mitsubishi. I'm open to obo.

So you guys have not seen any reoccurring mechanical failures on a gen3? I get that anything can break, but I was more curious about weak points mechanically that people should be aware of (ie CVs, axles, gear sets etc)?

Sierra Nevada Challenge 2018 *NOW with 20% more pictures!*

That's cool seeing the Gen 3 run it. What are the common weak links you guys have seen wheeling a gen3 hard? Is the front axles the main issue?

New to the Montero scene but going all in on this Gen 3

Sweet. I have carried my husky 300 a few times on mine. My dual sport is a KTM 950. Not sure the montero would be up for it, If you plan to carry the bike a lot get the HD OEM springs or air bags. I went the air bag route and they really help with heavy loads. If I were to do it again...

New to the Montero scene but going all in on this Gen 3

Congrats sounds like a good deal. My input is go with an actual lift. I'm not a fan of spacers and I think you will run into CV joint and associated front end issues down the road with spacers. An OEM lift only runs about 650. You can cut a lot of that price if you just get the springs and...

    Montero rear diff carrier shims?

Thanks PLH. I used a belt sander and was able to make the OEM shims work. The rear turned out really good. The front I got lazy and the back lash was too big. Sure enough it whines in 4wd, so I guess its coming out again to re-do. The front is a pain in the ass, but o well. I bet I get it...

No 33 spline. I'm pretty sure all monteros are 33 not 35.

Anyone interested in an OEM Gen 3 rear LSD? Not the carrier, just the locker. It will work with 4.3 and 4.9 gears. $250 shipped.

    Montero rear diff carrier shims?

No luck with local stuff. I'm sure if I had a good connection, but I tried a few transmission shops and some differential shops. None would help. Most of the differential places said they only know the application of the shims and were not interested in matching up OD and ID. Ironically the...

03 Limited hitting end of road? Talk me out of it.

Honestly, if money is tight and the shocks seem fine just skip them. The o2 sensor can be done in the driveway with a floor jack to get a little more room under the truck. Use a good o2 sensor. I had all kinds of o2 codes with gereric sensors. I upgraded to Denso (I think) and all the issues...

03 Limited hitting end of road? Talk me out of it.

So around $500 total? Maybe a bit more and 5 hours of work? Um, yeah keep it. Used cars need work, just the way it is unless you're consistently rotating newer vehicles every year or two. I have never understood why people will complain about dropping money on a used, paid off car, but then...
