Full-Time Couple in a Short Bus

Our leaf springs are absolutely shot and will be replaced in the future with a couple of inches of lift (any recommendations?) Currently the bus has a 3 leaf pack on top of a 1-2 inch block. We replaced the shocks in June, but the body still has a lot of sway and a pretty rough ride so we opted...

Full-Time Couple in a Short Bus

We made it back to Oklahoma in time to driveway crash for a month or so and visit family which has given us a ton of time to do some much needed work on our bus. First step, install our Espar D2 Diesel air heater. We drilled a couple of holes in the floor and my father in law wipped out a...

We flew back to Oklahoma as a family friend had some Grand Canyon permits for backpacking, plus it was good to visit family and friends. We returned to our bus in Virginia and took off for the coast and the Outer Banks. Paddling outside of Charleston, SC More Charleston Cemetery...

Full-Time Couple in a Short Bus

Apologies for the lack of updates. In South Dakota, we made some changes to the interior of the bus and added a Camp Chef oven...GAME CHANGER. We ran around South Dakota for a month or so while hanging out with family and finishing up the bus and we are excited to plan another trip to the...

Opinions on methods to carry 4 bikes on a 4Runner?

We use the pivot on our van with a Yakima Hold Up 4 and its a lot. I’m not worried about the pivot long term more so the receiver arm on the Yak. Add the weight of the rack, pivot, and all of the bikes. Now check the tongue rating on your hitch. Id say two on the back and kids on top.

Looking for expedition vehicle suitable for family of 5

This was along the same lines of what I was thinking if $250,000 was out of budget. A long wheelbase sprinter with strategically placed bunk beds would work on the cheap. If a capable off-road truck is needed, then an F450/550 with a custom box on top would work too for under $100,000.

    UTV's as an overlanding vehicle?

They are fun, but that’s where it stops for me. I could see towing one behind an RV for fun, but not for any type of overlanding expedition longer than a few days. They simply don’t have the payload. They are great off-road toys though.

    My great Ambulance Tire debate

We are in a Chevy short bus and will be going to 235/85/16 shortly. 255’s are a good size but they are hard to find especially when abroad.

    Budget overland vehicle advice

That’s a really good point. We would struggle skiing out of our short bus for the reasons mentioned. Shopping for a tiny wood stove now to dry things out!

    Budget overland vehicle advice

Same as the rest of your options. Underpowered for the mileage and is still an old truck. I’m in the domestic camp on this one too. The Toyota tax is real and you can get a lot of truck for your budget in a US make. Chevy 6.0 gas trucks are going for nothing right now and tick all of your boxes.

    Grand Canyon Heads Up

Just returned from a trip to the Canyon as well and water was turned back on at start of the week at IG and the BA rest stops. Then single digit temps came in and shut down everything but Phantom.

Grand Canyon: Tapeats, Deer and Kanab Creeks - FAIL

We have done this same trip and you will have to carry water, lots of water. There was basically no monsoon season this year and the Tonto is dry. This hike requires carrying a ton in a normal year. Cottonwood is a reliable source IMHO and I think the other source you are thinking of is...

    2002 Chevy short bus build

So many questions... Are you worried about maxing your GVWR? How much does it weigh after everything you have done? What was your process for skinning the Windows?
