On trail comms; Why and how survey

I use FRS/GMRS Why you initially bought it- Trail comms, and comms with the base station at my cabin What type of radio you chose- FRS/GMRS handhelds (Motorola) (vehicle to vehicle, dismounted) and in the truck a Midland MXT series. How you actually use it now- Exactly the way I envisioned...

The Snorkel's relevance to North American overlanding

Though not relevant to the "North America" part of this thread, my Donaldson pre-filter does collect a SIGNIFICANT amount of junk (including some smaller road debris) just driving to work and back over the course of a month. Mid-summer, I can drive offroad in a group of 3 or 4 for maybe 3 hours...

Caution: Inreach SE SOS button can be activated even if locked

I carry several different devices for tracking and notification. I ALWAYS carry them in a separate pouch (usually on my person) or attached to a pack, etc. for this specific reason. It started after I realized that even leaving my headlamp in a big pocket with all kinds of other things can cause...

Why don’t more people take the WK2 overlanding?

OWNED. I have a 2015, and because when I land in the states I have to immediately drive 10-13hrs just to get to my woods, it can't be beat. Plus the utility coupled with the comfort and ergonomics is far superior to what I consider the boxy interior of the JK's (family has two, and I have...

Medical Kit Containers: Bag vs Hard Case

For my home, I have a rather extensive kit in a Pelican 1510 Case. I used the Pelican foam divider kit that is normally used for photographers to organize it. I think I spend maybe almost $200 on that set up. Worth it though. The lid organizer is especially handy to hold the small tools and all...

Who does a timing belt at 70k miles?

Yeah but it was done at the dealer. They are going to use the Aisin pump and all other Toyota parts.

    Groot the Explorer T100

I have a '95 here with me overseas. I love it, and it has given me no issues. I have the even more rare single cab long bed with the 5VZ, which as I understand it was only made in '95. You'll find that it is extremely powerful for its size, and easy to work on. I would recommend replacing the...

    PLB Monitoring

I can tell you firsthand of a private firm routing an activation from a DeLorme inReach that eventually led to an American answering the phone and assisting in getting assets overhead in the middle of nowhere, Afghanistan. Start to finish, about 30 minutes (it turned out to be an accidental...

Weber Q 1200 or Magma Gas Grill?

I have a Q1200 and its probably one of my favorite grills. I have never taken it on a trip, it sits on my rather small balcony. It heats quickly, and evenly. No hot spots, and its easy to clean. Also, the side tables detach (with some work) to make it even smaller.

    Which shovel?

If you can carry a full size, do that. If not, carry the old metal E-Tool. I have used both styles, both in the military and after. I have broken the plastic ones (I think the military plastic ones are made by Gerber). The metal ones are almost all made by Ames, and I have never broken one...
