    Family Mosquito Control

Thermacells work very well in a stationary environment. They don’t do much if you’re moving. I’ve found while hiking if you maintain a decent pace the mosquitoes aren’t bad. It’s when you pause to mess with something or take a break that they come swarm you.

Possible long travel air bags and managable ride?

Curious if anyone has messed with mounting LR3 rear air struts on a full-size pickup. They have more than enough travel and if you mounted them in place of the rear shocks with custom upper mounts I’d think you could get away with a very light spring pack...

Life With A Supercharged RRS For an Overland Rig

Does the spare tire sit underneath the vehicle and lower down with a winch like the LR3’s? If so, the Front Runner drawer systems just have a hole run through them and a socket on an extension to get it out. If it’s inside under a lift up panel like the Range Rovers, you’ll have to pull all that...

Universal bed rack for M101a2 trailer

If you’re not putting a lot of weight on the top, why not just use 1/2” or 3/4” EMT conduit and a manual bender?

Trailer and RTT or an enclosed camper?

The two (or three) things I’d consider are how much off roading/trail work you plan to do, and what weather conditions you plan to use it in. Cost is going to be bout the same, looking at $1,000 for a utility trailer and $1,000 for a tent vs $2,000 for an enclosed. I assume fuel economy will be...

Life With A Supercharged RRS For an Overland Rig

The roof bars/baskets are a huge improvement to the functionality of these, my FrontRunner load bars are one of my favorite additions. You should be able to have somebody drive next to you and see if you have a bent rim. I saw a RRS with one last week that was very visible. Couldn’t catch up to...

    LR3 Keys

Think you’re SOL with that being your only key. Mine only came with one, I bought 2 LR3 blanks off Amazon for $15 each. My local locksmith was able to cut the blades to match using the original key, programmed them with the IID tool, both worked and will start the vehicle. They don’t have...

Soooo.... You watched some old guys sighting in their rifles? :)

    Lift rods vs GAP?

According to a tire size calculator, which aren’t always accurate, those tires are 0.3” taller than mine and 0.4” wider. I’m running stock height on road, when I get to the dirt I plug in the GAP tool and raise it 1”, then run in normal height until I get it deeper ruts or water crossings...

    Lift rods vs GAP?

IIRC, the adjustments made via the GAP tool are on the sensor, not the actual air strut, so a 10mm change ends up being over 25mm at the wheels. You can drop it all the way to the bumpstops with the GAP tool and take a measurement, and then put it into extended mode by putting a block of 2x4...

    LR3 Transmission service and Leak....

Those heat shield bolts are a bit of a “gate keeper”, the worst part of the job IMO. If you get that free the rest isn’t terrible. My favorite tool combo for the oil pan bolts was a cut down Torx bit with a 10mm Gearwrench. The sleeve took a decent amount of force to pop in to where the...

    Discovery 2 Vs GX470

I tend to get along with Toyota guys ok, as we are both the outcasts of the off road community by not being Jeep owners. The most interesting discussion most JK/JL guys around here have seems to be color-coordinating as many bolt on trinkets as possible to their 22” wheels with mud terrains on...

Wiring Fridge Using ARB Universal Socket Mount

I believe this is likely more a result of dealing with stock vehicle installations rather than dedicated auxiliary fuse blocks. You obviously want it to have power with the ignition off and OEM wiring is undersized for minimizing fridge voltage drops. I don’t want any more ring terminals on my...

Help me dream up the perfect sub $30k rig!

As a fan of versatility/modularity, I can appreciate what you’re trying to accomplish. As somebody else said though, I’d probably just wait until you move unless your current rig isn’t reliable enough to make the trip, or you have way more options where you’re living now. If you don’t know...

Wiring Fridge Using ARB Universal Socket Mount

As Verstad said, just use a butt connector to step it down to 10 gauge, then a spade connector. A few inches of smaller gauge wire won’t measurably change anything. I find it strange that you’re getting a significant voltage drop with 10 gauge unless you’ve got a really long run like the back...

    “Under rated” winch?

Thanks guys, winch and mounting plate showed up today, so I’ll get started on it. I’ve got everything else but a snatch block.

Best *mid priced* Kinetic Recovery Rope?

IMO, there is still nothing wrong with a quality, appropriately rated recovery strap (not a tow strap with hooks), especially if you don’t want to spend $200 on a rope. This is assuming you’re talking about normal vehicles rather than something like a Unimog. We used to regularly do dumb stuff...

    “Under rated” winch?

I’ve been planning to add a winch to my Land Rover LR3, which has a curb weight of 5,800 lbs. I have ~ 200 lbs worth of extra weight on it, including the winch, rather than a typically heavily laden expedition vehicle. I’m aware of the GVWR x 1.5 method, which would put me at a 9,500/10,000 lb...

    Recovery thoughts, ideas, advice

It sounds like a pair of Maxtrax would solve the majority of these issues. Even with highway-ish tires (Cooper AT3’s), I was very surprised at how well they worked in some gumbo mud.

    New Defender Rage/Hate Thread

I get the reputation aspect, and I’m not saying they don’t have problems. My point is that they make no distinction between “the Bluetooth doesn’t recognize my phone sometimes”, or “I get a check license plate light chime on the dash, but the light works”, versus “It spun a rod bearing at 32k...
