    Legs for Your Panels?

I had a project I needed a couple of 48" clamps for, so got some at HF with a coupon: http://www.harborfreight.com/48-in-aluminum-bar-clamp-60540.html. Once finished with the project, didn't need 'em so decided to repurpose them by adding to my Grape Solar panel for a stand. Just bolted two on...

    AWESOME mapping tool for IPhone/Android/Tablets

Some of Trimble hunting apps show private land, FWIW, but I think you need a membership to get all the details.

    Looking for mapping software, help!

What tablet? what OS? Trimble has some apps that do that.

Anyone make their own propane stove?

Not sure exactly what you mean by on the end. There are lots of stove top ones, with the knobs facing up by the burners. Or this: http://www.amazon.com/Alpine-Cusine-BS-400-Propane-Burner/dp/B005CUUASU/ref=pd_sim_sg_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=1TVSQK75MJ551EHR40D6 These are used in high output situations...

    Grape Solar

I got one of their 100W panels from CostCo. Fit and finish is great, and it's quite sturdy. I took some aluminum bar and bolted on two rails, with two other rails on a pivot to make a sort of self standing frame. Works great.

Water Jugs?? What do you use?

Thanks for the LCI site; I got misdirected when I searched on it to the ontimesupplies place, which has the exact same products. Odd. But great that they're still there at $25/. They really can't be beat...and here in CA in our drought looks like I'm gonna have to import water from camping sites...

Questions/frustrations re: Charging new GZ yeti 400 (only 40W input w/60W of panels)

I seem to recall that the use of PET rather than glass also reduces the efficiency, but I can't say for sure. But I'd say you're perhaps right about going with one panel. You're using about 40"x 18" of panel, right? For a supposed 60W? Go to CostCo and get Grapesolar 100w; it's 40x27 so a bit...

Water Jugs?? What do you use?

I forgot to mention that the real LCI Products 20L jugs went up to $40/, unfortunately (but it's to a good cause sort of). The caps are rather hard to find on the website; they're here: http://www.ontimesupplies.com/lci600118.html. And note the change in the website name to ontimesupplies.com...

Water Jugs?? What do you use?

Watch that little plug. Go up in elevation and it pops open. Or when squished. Or sloshed around on washboard. We couldn't use 'em because of contamination due to this design flaw, which is present on some of the other el cheapos (or maybe not that cheapo, surprisingly). The seven gallon one at...

Instapark Mercury 27W portable solar panels

Has anyone used the Instapark Mercury27 portable solar panels? They're a 27 watt four panel folding system, with USB 2.1A and 12v outputs. Otherwise fairly minimal with no battery and such (which I don't need, I even have a spare controller). Look like decent deal @ $130US Amazon, $109 eBay. But...

Water Jugs?? What do you use?

I've worn holes in about 5 of those containers. Both on river trips and in the back of a van or pickup. Pressure changes pop them open, and they leak if they fall over. They say "short term use" and they mean it; like from here to the car. You're better off with the supermarket juice jug...

IPad mapping app that allows stylus use

Sorry this is a bit techie, but iOS devices can use styluses, but they just input devices. Sorta like your finger but not as thick. Tons of folks will sell you some. But that's only part of what you're asking. You also want a map you can draw on. Like highlighting a AAA map, no? you'd have to...

    Canadian campground application for Macs

Mr. Modesitt has released his Mac OS application for Canadian campgrounds: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ultimat ... 3545?mt=12 It's based on http://www.ultimatecampgrounds.com/uc/index.php, a HUGE database of campgrounds. I have the Mac OS version of the US campgrounds and it is hard to...

new MacBook vs Retina MacBook Pro

That new USB port is the standard; you'll be eventually seeing it everywhere. Sorta like a lightning or thunderbolt; reversible. And higher power, up to 3A. And wicked fast. I'm sure it's a fine machine, but I wonder if we're getting near a point with it, and others, where lightness is a...

    USB in series?

I guess I should wait; USB 3.1 type C will apparently do 3A. The just announced Macbook 12" will apparently sport that connector.

    USB in series?

That's doable but I'd want the protection circuit, and maybe the charging, included as well. Those batteries can do bad things when they misbehave, like bring down planes. The nice thing is that there are cheap little USB chargers that have all those components for less than I can buy them for...

    USB in series?

Yeah, not what I need since it's going in the opposite direction, so to speak, but increasingly handy as more and more 5v stuff with USB plugs is available. And if you wanna a little bit of soldering, this...

    USB in series?

Thanks, but I'm aware of the amperage limits (there is a new one coming, but most of the USB outputs in use are at most 2.1A, for fast charging some smartphones and tablets). The amps provided are more than enough for lots of stuff I use. BTW if you do need them in parallel there are cords for...

    USB in series?

Anyone ever hack together a system to put some USB power sources together in series for 12v use? I think USB is standardized at 5.5v, so it would be three sources and voltage conversion down to 12. I ask cuz I seem to have a bunch of LiOn USB output batteries now, but some of my stuff is 12v...

Advice needed for a newbie to high tech tools.

You can get the most capable portable device, a laptop, running a traditional computer OS like Windows or Mac OS. Running traditional computer programs. Or smaller netbooks, or combo devices, still running Windows, a traditional desktop OS now scaled for these smaller devices. Then smaller to...
