    Front Runner Wolf Packs

I'd like something right about the size of the Wolf Packs but a bit more heavy duty, and with nicer latches. 2 similarly-sized Pelican cases come in at around $160 each.

    Gas can storage

The old-fashioned European-made metal jerrycans leak the least vapors, but still a tiny bit comes out. I'd find a way to ventilate the canopy area. Does it have windows that can open? I'd surely not want my clothes or bedding to stink of gas.

    Headlamps

Modern alkaline batteries are almost guaranteed to leak and corrode. I've had Duracells that leaked IN THE PACKAGE, a year before the use by date! Eliminate them from your life to the greatest extant possible. The expensive lithium AA's don't leak, but aren't rechargeable. The rechargeable...

Total newb needing some Sat phone basics help.

Excellent idea. The extra batteries for my Inmarsat iSatphone Pro (Mk.1) weren't very expensive at the time...something like $22 or so, as I recall. They're easily interchangeable, like the cell phones of bygone times. Iridium must be similar?

Total newb needing some Sat phone basics help.

Having owned only an Inmarsat satphone for a few years, I cannot comment on Iridium other than to say that on paper, it's the best system...but, also the most expensive system. The Inmarsat system requires that you aim the phone to a specific spot in the sky. Iridium doesn't and is more...

    Gullwing Windows

On my old camper shell, they were called 'windoors'. Extremely useful.

    Iridium ZOLEO

This system, if it works as advertised, would seem to break the affordability barrier for a lot of folks. I like that it does longer (900+ characters) SMS and emails. Better than my satphone that only does very short SMS and emails.

Scepter MFC vs Wavian NATO fuel can

The Scepter MFCs are almost indestructable, don't dent, can take a bullet without igniting the fuel inside. In my experience they also seep more vapor since they are plastic. I hate leaking gas-smell. I switched from Scepter MFCs to the Wavian-type jerrycans and the fuel odors are reduced...

    Lets talk about camp lights

The gas lanterns make noise, and the liquid fueled ones make noise and death fumes. Since I live in a car-infested city, I seek to minimize burning chemical smells when out in the bush.

    Gaia web not displaying maps

I had that same problem a few months ago and never really figured out what was wrong. At the same time I had a multiple account issue (my fault), which Gaia fixed promptly when I notified them.

    Car Paint Colors & Temperatures

Measuring the inside temperature would require having 10 or 15 identical cars, all oriented the same way to the sun, whose only difference was the paint color. Impossible to find, even at a big dealer.

    LR3 to 3rd gen 4Runner: lateral move or upgrade/downgrade

Keep in mind that that 4Runner is almost guaranteed to need new springs, tires, and shocks, lower ball joints, radiator + hoses and a battery. Add another $1K to $2K for surprise repairs. How long do LR3's last, and how badly does their resale value decline with mileage? If the 4R you're...

    Gas can kill.

Here's how I approach spare gas on my slow speed 4WD excursions: 1. Carried on the rear in city traffic or at high speed freeway traffic is a bad idea. Once on your dirt adventure begins, where the chances of being rear-ended are nil, it doesn't matter. 2. Carried on the roof (the way I do it...
