    Triumph Tiger 800 XC

Triumph has a reputation for reliable and durable bikes that work well. The tiger has received good reviews and appears to be a good alternative to an F800 GS. If it appeals to you, go for it. I doubt you will have much to regret. Jim

    Reviving a Norton

Yes, the frame has been braced. That work was done by the original owner, along with adding an oil cooler, switching to a single Amal carb from twin and a high lift cam. Haven't settled in my mind what the finished bike will be, beyond a rider and it won't be a restoration. Thank you all for...

    Reviving a Norton

24 hours....:"Nice garage. Complete with a factory Motorrad tool board and a couple of OEM bike cranes. This should be a nice build." It should be, since it is the shop of a BMW dealer, Max BMW in North Hampton, NH - good people if you are in the area. Stumpalump: "There is a shop in Colorado...

    Reviving a Norton

This has found its way into my garage. 1975 Norton Commando 850 Mark III. It hasn't been on the road in over 20 years and it needs lots of care and attention. http://revivinganorton.blogspot.com/ Jim

Overland Journal Project Land Rover Discovery 4 (LR4)

Scott, how did you secure the drawer unit, did you simply bolt it to the existing tie down points? Also very interested in learning how you fit 18" wheels. Jim

    Forester: ExPo Subaru Project

The 2010 on Outback would make a fine overlanding rig. Huge storage particularly if you are traveling as a couple and decent ground clearance, 8.5" stock. I'd stay with a manual trans, not sure how durable the VCT would be in extended low traction driving. Jim

Look what found its way into my garage

Powerlet http://www.powerlet.com. If you are installing on an F650 single and in the same place I did, use the plug that has a 90 degree bend for the wires. Jim

I've been very pleased with my Darien, though my Barbor International is the favorite. Jim

WTB: BMW System Cases for R1100S (yes...it's a long shot)

Flounder, the system cases that fit the R1100RS/RT/R fit the the S. You will need to find the proper mounting brackets, which would be difficult. But they probably still available from BMW. Buy the cases used and by the rack new. Sort through the microfiche and figure out what you need...

Subarus: what's a good starting point?

Early oughts Subarus had problems with head gaskets failing, caused by or resulting in the occasional warped cylinder head. Some middle ought boxers suffer from piston slap, more an annoyance than a problem. The manual transmission cars have a 50-50 power distribution F & B. The automatics are...

CAMPTEQ's 80 Series Land Cruiser pop top Prototype

I'm no longer surprised we underestimate the cost of things that we would like to have. Is $6K out of line? I don't think so AT's Habitat and Ursa Minors top for JK Wranglers are close to that. Somewhere I have a link to a French company that makes a pop-top for 80 & 100 Series LC and those are...

Subaru Outback (or similar) towing an expo trailer? Warning - philosophical rambling

The 2010 and newer OB has a tow rating of approximately 2700# with the 2.5 and 3000# with the 3.6. A couple of considerations for the 6 speed manual, in dry conditions power is deployed 50-50 front to rear, with the CVT it is 90-10 front to rear, the 5 speed auto of the 3.6 is 85-15 front to...

BMW riders - Thoughts on G 650 GS Sertao?

The Sertao is a very nice bike and will do everything that you anticipate and more. A lot of bikes will meet your spec, but if the BMW calls your name, get it. Jim

Ways to Increase the Jeep JK Payload

What I believe is missing in this discussion is that the manufacturer considers more than will the hardware survive the expected duty cycle under an expected range of use, but (I believe more importantly) that the vehicle will perform dynamically across a wide range of expected use. I.E. can a...

New rider seeks input on purchase

You can't go wrong buying either the KLR 650 or an F-G 650 Dakar/Sertao. Both are fine bikes that are perfectly happy on soft roads. Both are reliable and easy to maintain for home mechanics. Yes the BMW has FI and a computer, but you will seldom need to read those codes and if you do there is...
