    Ford Dodge or Mercedes van

I would take snow tires 2wd over summer tires AWD any winter day. So you can probably save yourself the price and sourcing headaches and go 2WD and snow tires, assuming you are running an AWD with summer tires in the winter without issue.

    Ford Dodge or Mercedes van

Depends on where you live. In the USA diesel is often 10-20% more than gasoline, which wipes out most or all of the fuel economy improvements. Then add in the extra maintenance costs of a diesel (DEF/urea, overall higher cost of ownership), and a light duty diesel vehicle doesn't have any...

    Ford Dodge or Mercedes van

I would say transit AWD, or if you feel the need a transit quigley conversion. The current pricing for sprinter 4x4s is above MSRP in most markets. Not sure on the transit. The only reason to consider the sprinter in my opinion, is if you can get the I4 gasoline engine. Quigley was (and may...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

I can't tell from the photos, but lightly pre scoring the paint where it might flex and crack at seams, could be called for? A lot depends on how the panels move, which is based on fastening method and adhesive used. A clean break at the score mark, is often a lot less obvious than an...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Having spent some time in the Aus summer, one could conceivably argue the only appropriate color for a live aboard vehicle there, is white! What paint system are you using? Single stage hardened urethane, or?

Fridge Controller for Danfoss/SECOP powered fridges/freezers

Yes, or if you want a single speed, a resistor in series. If you check the danfoss/secop manual, they have a list of resistor values and the speed they produce. I think its 2-4k ohm, so a potentiometer in the right range would work fine. You may need to get a 0-2k pot and then put a 1-2k...

Fridge Controller for Danfoss/SECOP powered fridges/freezers

The danfoss compressors are inverter driven (3 phase ac output, low voltage). They can vary the speed in a ~1500rpm range. Advanced controllers like the one I made use a PWM signal. Old school mechanical thermostats have the option to use a series resistor, for the fridge maker to adjust...

Fridge Controller for Danfoss/SECOP powered fridges/freezers

The T terminal is a 5V current limited supply. The controller measures the current on the T terminal, and that is what controls compressor speed and on/off. It should be described in one of my prior posts in detail. Connecting the T terminal to ground or C sets the current to max, which is...

Fridge Controller for Danfoss/SECOP powered fridges/freezers

What is the voltage between C and T? Between C and ground/negative?

MB 1120 Coming to America! Purchase, Build and Now Travel!

A surface mount probe on the pan would probably work fine. I have seen dipstick replacement probes, but not as clean to use. A oil temp sensor in the oil gallery before the cooler could work as well. Some folks like to view the oil temp after the cooler, but that will mask high oil temps if...

MB 1120 Coming to America! Purchase, Build and Now Travel!

I would say 670C for a minute, 650 for several minutes, and 620 sustained. Have you considered an oil sump temperature gauge? Since the pistons receive a lot of cooling from the oil, high engine stress often shows up quicker in the oil. Sump Oil temps 40C above coolant wouldn't be unusual...

Sprinter 4WD Conversion Idea, GMT-800 IFS.

I don't want to break stuff, so the 2.7/1 low range is fine for me. With the automatic I get extra slip when crawling anyways. Besides, having a top speed of 15mph in low range would make it unusable for much of my driving.

Sprinter 4WD Conversion Idea, GMT-800 IFS.

It was a standard rebuilt. The gold standard would be direct from MB, but it's pricey. I bought a DACCO brand. If you have a local custom builder, a T1N TC with the latter ncv3 hub/clutch is better.

Torque converter? It was a Rock Auto unit, I can look up the brand if you like. If it's the transfer case your after, I went junkyard hopping via car-part.com

Yeah, not much helps on ice besides chains or studs. I have seen 4x4s spinning all 4 wheels on flat icy parking lots.

    Building a Micro-Split AC System

1535BTU/450W is just enough for two people in a curtained bed area. Assuming reasonable insulation. Depending on the blower head pressure, you may consider just routing the air under a blanket (or cooling shroud/blanket like hospitals use). That would make it feasible for sleeping...

Another tip on the cell service. If you didn't already know, its common for towers to shunt you to a frequency which results in poorer throughput. In remote areas channel 13 (around 700mhz) often has the best throughput, especially when you have trees or poor line of sight. In more crowded...

Ski Bum Truck V2.0, F450 Rough Road RV

I ended up with a pivot mount and a thumbscrew. What is the gain on your antenna? I have found the key to reliable service is to have two different carriers, so you have a backup in areas of poor coverage. At least until starlink allows mobile intsalls!

Ski Bum Truck V2.0, F450 Rough Road RV

If you need to carry a jump pack, there are capacity based ones which are pretty reliable. They require charging from a battery, even a mostly discharged one will do it, though it could take 20 minutes. Then you get a single crank. They should work fine even when cold.
