Nice thread!
I spent a few years working as a Fuelie down for the USAP, based mainly in McMurdo but have been to Pole and Palmer and WAIS divide and many field camps.
Met my wife there. Antarctica will always be a special place to us.
Here’s some of my stories:
Winter in McMurdo
WAIS Divide...
Yeah, that’s one of the reasons I’ll cross reference to the actual mvum since it’ll show where you can/cannot dispersed camp based on management and property boundaries.
I just make sure to pay attention to whichever side the dots are on.
If you haven’t yet, check out COTREX which is a multi-agency partnership app in Colorado that allows you to select activity then gives you routes cues to that. It’s free through the app stores.
Pretty much my go-to when exploring CO at this point, backed up by Avenza and the actual mvum/travel...
Not me personally. I’m over dealing with unnecessary headaches at this point. So the discount becomes irrelevant. The right deal can be found elsewhere with less potential hoops and negotiations and issues down the line. We looked for a few months for a power wagon, and then the right deal...
For what it’s worth (ymmv), we bought our power wagon while my wife was pregnant and got an AT habitat installed right after she was born, along the same lines of wanting something for our family to get out and go easily and have plenty of space for our daughter and us to sleep and be protected...
I’ve got 220k on my 07 xterra. She still purs like a kitten after a lot of hell it’s been put through, did timing chains at 200k. Minus the smod issue, the only things that have gone wrong with it have been due to my stupidity.
So yeah. I’m a fan of Nissan. Or at least the xterra.
Correct. We’ve bought my wife’s two last cars in CO and brought them to AK. No sales tax paid to CO, none for AK. Just registration and titling in AK.
The last time we did it, one of the dealerships we were working with gave us a hell of a bunch of **************** about how they “couldn’t do it” and...
We love our power wagon (2 adults, 1 toddler, 1 130lb canine toddler, similar pack out list to your lean side). It does everything I need/ want it to do, at the obvious sacrifice of payload. But we tent camp and run an ARE shell. I’m weight conscious for sure with it, but still feel safely...
We had a an AT habitat on our power wagon for about a year and put it through some pretty good paces. We loved it, but didnt quite fit the bill we were needing with our young daughter and the flip-open design was difficult for my wife to manage with her height. We ended up selling it late last...
We have an ARE on our power wagon. It’s the CX HD model with the internal aluminum frame and roof bars. Honestly, it was a stop gap for us after getting rid of our habitat, but I do actually like it a ton. We will be getting it wrapped/painted to de-panda our truck now that we’ve decided to keep...
Congrats on the purchase! You’ll love it. I too graduated from an XJ to an xterra. Mine is an 07 with 220k on it. Been a fantastic rig!

Been working on trying to do better organization in our PW over the last couple years, starting with a unit I built when we had our Habitat and now continuing into ARE canopy territory. This is version 2 of a “shelf unit” that I’ve done.
For starters, I ran two 6’ lengths of aircraft track...
I’ve beat the hell out of my NF duffels on 4 continents, ranging from sea level to 18,000ft via mules back, and 110F to being kicked out of an aircraft at -40 at the south pole, and I’ll second this. They are fantastic bags. My go-to for big trips.

Luke, our “puppy”… 3yr old 130lb mastiff mix wondering why he can’t fly in the float cub.
Oh. I am gonna follow up with you. That’s amazing. I’m always looking for a good flight bag and I’ve got some questions.
Back on topic…. We use the REI duffels for me and our kiddo, and my wife uses a similar Patagonia bag. All different colors, all 60L. Fits in overhead compartments on...
