School me about Pelican cases - the different generations

I scored a couple of Pelican 1650 cases, one brand new and one experienced (two tours in Iraq) for $100 cash plus about $150 worth of reloading components that I didn't need any more. Here's the thing: I thought they were identical, but it turns out that they are different generations. Old one...

    Human waste in the backcountry

I have to add that dog waste is just as important - please try to not let your dog leave presents for future campers to tread on. John Davies Spokane WA USA

    My Junk

Those big tahrs and the airbag suspension are phenomenal, and a US$20K option, if I remember correctly. The airbags are easy to adjust from the cabin to raise one side on a sidehill, or one end for a ledge, or for quick leveling at a campsite. ER has a ton of the old small wheels and tires for...

Icelandic glacier truck - 1973 Scout on 44s..... fully expedition ready

Not too bad, I expect: "A 4-speed manual distributes torque via electrically locking FJ80 Land Cruiser axles, but not before passing through twin transfer cases for super-low gear capability. Front and rear diffs run 4.88:1 gears" John Davies Spokane WA USA

New Four Wheel UTE Flat Bed Model Coming Soon ...

Denny - thanks for the info. My wife and I will do our utmost to attend. We really like Helena, so maybe we can end up visiting there some day and seeing the Ute.... Please post a bunch of pics of this new rig! Better yet, a video walk through. I'm sure all the Portal members would like that...

Change of course, thanks for the help.

I think brakes with a parking feature are worth investing in, even if you don't wire them up. It is so much easier to do it right the first time. Keep your removable tongue. Just buy a piece of heavy wall square tubing at the local steel store and extend the receiver as far forward as needed...

Ball joint advice - 95 Tahoe

This is a super idea - you can clean up the junkyard parts, install the new stuff and then paint them. Then swap everything over a weekend and take your scrap parts to the recycle center.... I wish this approach was feasible for Land Cruisers..... John Davies Spokane WA USA.

New Four Wheel UTE Flat Bed Model Coming Soon ...

I see at the FWC website that they will attend the Missoula Outdoor Show March 22-23. Has anyone heard what models will be on display? I emailed Denny in Jackson WY, but he didn't respond to this particular question. Hopefully it will include this one or better yet a Hawk Ute...... if so, I...

    Adventure Trailers Max Coupler

This is an old thread, but I wanted to correct your statement. There is no way the Max can move 360 degrees in the vertical plane. I don't know of any type other than a pintle that can move much more than 70 degrees down and 140 degrees up, but someone can correct me if this is incorrect...

New RAM half-ton EcoDiesel gets 28mpg?..

Diesel is not just about burning less fuel between fillups - you get an incredible highway range and that is a huge deal for me. My '06 Ram 5.9 with a stock 34 gal tank has long legs (600+ miles), and I don't have to drag along cans of extra fuel like in my 80, which on a really good day gets...

Maxtrax vs TRED vs Tracmats vs X-Trax vs X-Jack

I just ran across a comparison article about the Maxtrax and TRED. One comment was that the TRED becomes incredibly heavy when packed with clay. The Max was much better in this respect. I don't have to deal with clay, so it isn't a big issue with me. "Paul: I have maxtrax, my mate has treds...

Maxtrax vs TRED vs Tracmats vs X-Trax vs X-Jack

Can someone please compare the "stowed" thickness of a pair of Maxxtrax vs the TRED 1100s? I am thinking about buying two sets, and if the thickness difference is a significant, I will go with the thinnest for space reasons. Otherwise I will get the TREDs. Thanks. John Davies Spokane WA USA

    Ruger Trailers Denver

I bet that will get wiped off the first time you drag your trailer past a tree or tall rock. ..... Plus it is very vulnerable to rock strikes from stuff kicked up by the tow vehicle. Please post a followup after a year or two. John Davies Spokane WA USA

School me about the latest brake controllers for off-road....

I would appreciate some recommendations for a brake controller for my '06 Ram 3500. I have a Jordan Ultima 2020 on my LX450 that is _wonderful_, but it's a long extinct product. And I am sure it's getting tired after 12 years, since it has a bike-type actuating cable and a rheostat inside that...
