Sure thing, here is the report about changing the front axle ratio.
@Sitec's explanation above about hub reduction axles sounds like it's related to your different axle ratios but more research is needed on my end to figure out what that really means, heh.
Oh! I have that book too and knew Ulrich went for a Zeppelin shelter but didn't realize that was the same thing as a radio box, heh. Seems like a good choice.
Hmm, I saw (also on YouTube) that the 917 is 4.25t so I just arbitrarily rounded up to 5 in my head for the 1120/1124 haha. If they are basically the same as the 917 that's good news for me!
Those truck facilities sound like perfect connections! What a great resource.
What is the radio box...
@Maxoden Amazing build thread! It's so great that you and so many others here have gone into such detail with the process. There are so many things I'd have no idea I'd need to do/consider otherwise. And that 1835 sure looks huge, bet she'll be a real luxury when she's finished (and definitely...
@Sitec Great tip about doing a live simulation of our layout! I'm currently living in a campervan but maybe during our next house sit we'll try this exercise (maybe without moving the homeowner's furniture and appliances around though ?).
Sorry I meant mine would be 8t including the truck...
Okay, I have educated myself a bit but still want to ask: is there a practical or fuel consumption difference between: 1) part-time 4wd where you switch between 2wd and 4wd via transfer case and 2) permanent 4wd where you lock/unlock the center diff? As I understand it in case 1 it drives one...
From what I have seen (and someone correct me if I'm wrong), these MBs come in 3 axle ratios:
Slow 5.25 (42: 8)
Medium 4.8 (39: 8)
Fast 4.3 (43:10)
So it looks like you have a mix of medium and fast? If you're thinking about converting the front axle to fast as well, there are threads about...
Yes I saw your comment somewhere about only having discovered the truck scene a few weeks ago and loved your impulse buying style, hah. I'm in Oz at the moment, otherwise I might've impulse bought one by now as well. Planning to leave here in Jan and hopefully be in Germany by Feb/March. Not...
Hi all, I'm wondering if anyone has links to some good sites to find refrigerated truck bodies in Germany? Didn't see many results on ebay kleinanzeigen (and they were all huge; I'd be looking for something around 4.5 - 5 meters to mount on a Mercedes-Benz 1124AF or similar truck). Would also...
@Geo.Lander BIG congrats on getting your truck! I'm so jealous haha, hope to have one of my own by next spring. In the meantime, I will live (and learn) vicariously through your build process. Thanks for sharing the cost too, seems like you got a fantastic deal. Which auction site did you get it...
Hey @Sitec! We are aiming for a 3.6m wheelbase since our current layout plans have 4.5m interior length. Ideally LHD but we plan to go to a lot of both LHD and RHD countries so RHD wouldn't be a deal breaker.
1820! Never considered anything rated that high, I always kind of assumed the...
@Joe917 I've heard that adding turbo to the engine can damage it and it's better to just buy one that came out of the factory with the desired hp? Or do you mean it's just a matter of tuning the injection pump or something?
Thanks for the note about the mixing of parts, good to know. Also great...
@Neil I full body shuddered at your pics of Cloud 9 on her side. Can't imagine the horror. Must admit this line made me lol a lot though: "Now jam is a peculiar product because we discovered that if you throw it at your walls then scrape it back up you actually end up with enough to fill 5...
@Neil Also an amazing truck! The interior looks so spacious and tastefully built too. I'd like to do a similar thing with mounting a motorbike and spare tire (probably just one) on the back.
Since you've been all around South America with Cloud 9, I was wondering if you have any thoughts about...
@DiploStrat Your truck looks amazing! Thanks for sharing your numbers, and I'm impressed you've managed to keep it so light with 140 gal of water/fuel and 4 AGM batteries. I wonder if I'm overestimating some of my weights.
I'll be driving it pretty much everywhere so figured an older...
Thanks so much for your input! 80% seems very sensible. The 1124 would definitely be my first choice, with OM 366 LA turbocharged and intercooled engine, though as you said they are more expensive and also the vast majority of the ones I've seen have the extra long driver cabs. I haven't looked...
Hi all, I'm planning to buy a 4x4 MB truck in the next few months and build a cabin on it. Looking for some thoughts on the following: If my estimated fully loaded weight is going to be ~8 tons (+/- 1 ton) what are the pros and cons of going for an MB 917 vs 1120/1124? I don't know enough to...
