Regarding these 400+ W solar panels: I read somewhere that anything over ~200W was too big for off roading due to the vibration on the glass plate, and with the bifacial panels you've got massive solid glass plates on both sides. To be clear, this is a random comment I read on a forum somewhere...
Hi all, I've been searching for reviews about Zocama (a cabin manufacturer in Barcelona) but haven't found anything written by actual clients of theirs. If anyone has experience with them, I'd love to know how it went.
Just bought a Mercedes Benz 1124 AF and now looking more closely at cabin...
Looks like they are part of CIMC which is quite a big company. They mainly do commercial truck bodies so not sure how much people are talking about their overland bodies. It's 1am here so I'll try to dig a bit more tomorrow!
No idea about the gearbox. I would ask but they haven't even replied about the axle ratios, pshhh. Maybe I'll ask a German friend to call them this week.
Yeah I guess there must be many reports from people who've replaced gears! I'll have a look around.
The truck looks like it's in good condition, 102xxx km which is higher than average for a fire brigade truck but still low compared to the million km that generation of engines is supposed to be good for. The only thing is the gearbox issue which I have no idea how much it would cost to fix...
I've been in WA for over a year but don't actually plan to buy/build the truck in Oz, especially since the government is being stingy about visa extensions these days I assume due to COVID (everyone I know who applied for another year only got 3 months). So I'll go to Germany in a few months...
Ideally I'd get an 1124AF, though 1120 or 1224 are also fine. The 1124 I was looking at with the front and rear diff locks has 6 speed manual. It seems pricey at €30k considering the damaged 2nd gear?
Regardless, about 50-60% of the trucks I've seen have 6 speed so I'll definitely aim for one...
Lucky find indeed! So far I've only seen one 1124 with both front and rear diff locks, and apparently it won't stay in second gear so I'm not sure how much it would cost to fix that. I've only been on the lookout for a month or two though, maybe I just need to be more patient.
Do you use the...
Hi all! I'm at a very early stage of planning my overland truck and these last weeks I've been trying to find a cabin building company that's a perfect match for my project. One of the companies under consideration is Twiga Travel Cars from the Netherlands. Their quote was quite a bit higher...
I love that this discussion is happening, it's the sort of thing I'd never think of otherwise and it helps to follow every detail of your process since I'll hopefully be starting the same one in a few months. ?
Makes a lot of sense when you put it like that! And anyway I the statement about their lack of robustness was made by a company who wants you to spend €70k on one of their custom boxes. :P
Do you have a list of all the companies you talked with? I'm beginning to wonder if the trick is just to find one that wasn't mentioned in Ulrich Dolde's book. :P
I'm sure Billie will be so thrilled to do some exploring in Gertrude later! :)
The mountain cabin sounds epic. So you are doing two very ambitious projects in parallel, wow. Good luck with that one too!
Everywhere you look in Norway is sooo beautiful. It's #1 on my list of countries I might someday like to live in when/if I ever get tired of traveling. That second photo is stunning!
Cool dog too. We don't even have one yet but we're already designing our entire layout around having a dog hahaha.
