Well, the van came in a few configurations, and some.of these engines werent that reliable. Especially the automatic turbo diesels.
My drivetrain is equal to the one in a standard Hilux (like top gear tested, or this youtuber more recently)
Mine doesnt have a turbo or power windows or anything...
I still have a Toyota 4x4 from 1994 and it doesnt seem to be having any of these issues. It is a Hiace van, pretty much a van version of the pickup. It is very reliable, only rust is an option. It has 130K miles on it, and the original LSD still works. Some drivetrain work came after driving it...
The whole point of choosing a Landcruiser is to deal with a lot of those "what ifs".
So choosing a 30 year old one is perhaps not that great, because there are some what ifs again.
I think the drivetrain is more related to the Megacruiser, in other words, quite rare.
The engines are not excentric, finding their origin in diesel 40 series Landcruisers, from 3B to 13BTE or something. So some basic parts might still fit. But these newer 13BT or 15BTE engines are not common at...
I am not doing that.
Some dude was suggesting 80s only had that suburbanite usage and so it would be easy to get a reputatuon for reliability.
Which is ridicilous and ignorant to the global history of Landcruisers. They have proven themselves.
I'm not saying a US pickup would be bad at its job...
It is not really special in Europe or US, mostly on paved roads anyway.
It is special if those 500.000km were all over Africa, or in some mointains in Asia in bad conditions. Central Asia and Mongolia for example. Though conditions and they don't back down.
Anyway, I am not sure if my point is...
Like I said, it wasn't to point out that Landcruisers are better. But that their heritage is true, and based on hard work in other continents. So a remark that Landcruisers would have a great reputation based on an easylife as soccer moms drive them around the US is ridiculous.
But here in...
Great, now lets look at the rest of the world. Asia, Africa and Australia. 80s have been used properly everywhere and still are, although sometimes replaced by the 100 series. Next to the usage of a 70 of course.
Our last trip through central asia and mongolia showed many 80s still in use. And...
I have always loved these Coasters since I saw them in Asia. Great drivetrains to, probably a 13Bfte or 15B engine.
Probably Toyota parts used in the 4x4 conversion so thats good.
But it would still suck to service it in Europe and North America. Maybe some big parts like diff, or half of the...
Yes it is going to be longitudal beds in the rear and no fixed bathroom. Then I think it i relatively easy.
With these side pods/flares sleeping from left to right, we would have some option to integrate a tiny bed room, but not sure if it is worth it. I care more about a toilet than about a...
Nice trip! That old dark wooden church gives you a taste of what churches you might find in Russia.
Funny to see my own country here (Netherlands) and then the countries we visited last summer.
Yes I saw that one. My idea is combining a kitchen with a table in between the front seats and rear seats. And then try to cram in all the features behind there.
Possibly using the popout podthings to sleep from left to right, but at 6'3 / 190cm it might not be ideal. It would save a lot of...
I have looked around, but it seems kind of hard to find a 4 person (family, 2 kids) floorplan for a 170" wheelbase Mercedes Sprinter.
It is typically 2 persons, or it is in an extended wheelbase, the longest version.
Of course it is always a compromise. So you could have the rear bench with...
It is already a classic or at least a future classic.
Completely different from a comparable 4X4 which doesnt get that attention.
The (lhd?) fzj80 should get worth more or at least depreciate very little. You might be better off buying a better more expensive one for better resale later. But...
