admittedly, it would look far far better if I had the patience to properly and extensively sand things to the fullest degree. But I always find some point where I say "meh, that should be fine, I'll just stop here" lol....
that said, if I went all the way, it would just show the dents and dings...
So jumping back to the hitch issue.
1) I just went out and looked and it made me remember why I don't want to go axle-over: my trailer shocks can't accommodate going that short, so I'd have to make new brackets for them, which is a pain in the ass.
2) I actually found a 3" (wide) channel...
meanwhile...
So I know I said earlier that I was just going to leave the paint as-is brushed on. But......today was really, really nice out, and I had nothing to do unless I wanted to do yard work (hard pass). And also, I always want to learn/get better at things I'm not good or experienced...
I was actually under there looking at the shackles today with the same idea, actually. Looks like I could probably chop them by about 1 inch and change, but that would only net me a drop of 1/2+ inches, so probably not enough, since I want everything to be level. I may do it regardless. The...
it's not the spare, it's the bottom of the door that can't clear the hitch ball lockdown latch. Past that, the door has full clearance to open all the way
Took the trailer down the street for its maiden voyage. Happy to report nothing fell off, and no issues noted. The Raider doesn't really notice it there when it's empty, which is nice.
I did, however, notice one small issue. In order to make the trailer sit level, I got a straight hitch...

Went to visit a buddy downtown today so took the truck since DC streets are pretty much offroading....
Did some quick sightseeing along the way
Then worked on another e30 for a while
Nice. Mine is a 5MT V6 as well w/offroad package like yours (admittedly, the 5MT came out of a rusty parts Raider I got).
I have a pretty extensive build thread (VERY extensive - engine rebuild, suspension and frame stuff, tons of interior stuff, rack, etc. ) a little ways down the page...
Not doing much today, but here's a 10-minute project. Bent up a couple pieces of steel bar and made some chain hooks for the trailer. Only posting it in the spirit of documenting even the little stuff. Try to contain your excitement ;)
Quick little after-work project using nothing but leftover scraps of rollbar tubing from the rally car and a random round steel plate....
Since this trailer is pretty well balanced with only around 30lbs of tongue weight when empty (in order to be able to move it around easily by hand), I...
It was in the 60s today so decided to do the topcoats of paint using a smooth roller.
So all done, two coats. Tured out pretty decent (certainly shows up all the dents and dings I didn't bother to fill), and honestly, I doubt I'll wetsand it. This is for utility, it'll get banged up and dirty...
Yep, my grandpa did as well, which is where I got the idea.. these are baby food jars from when my kids were little. That said, I've broken enough of them now (they do fall occasionally if you don't tighten them up enough), that I'm out of spares haha...
I also have most of the same nuts...
Tires came in so had them mounted up today (well, actually mounted twice since the guy originally put the white letters out, which isn't what I wanted). Also finished wet-sanding the first 2 coats of paint. So, making some progress.....
lol, ironically, I have 6 vehicles (and 2 trailers) and ALL of them have different bolt pattern wheels other than the Raider and Sequoia (and this trailer) with 6-lug.
That said, ALL of the tires in the photos of my garage are for the e30 rally car, since we use different tire for different...
I mean, it's getting close to that lol. This isn't going to have any fancy racks or tents or anything on it since it's primarily for hauling gear and rally support, not expedition stuff. There will be some other features, but most of them will be hidden in the bed.
Got going on the first couple coats of black on the trailer today. Just did foam roller, so right now it looks pretty meh. Plan is to wet sand it now, then do another couple coats, wet sand again, and hit it with some compound on my orbital. Just to be clear - the goal here is NOT for it to look...
So, for the rally car (where we need long-distance and clarity since we're going 80mph through the woods at night), I use higher-end Hella and DIode Dynamics bars so we don't "outrun" our lights at speed (a common problem in rally).
For the Raider, where anyplace I'm offroad at night I'll be...
