    D70, best telephoto without shaking?

Nikon's 70-300VR would be a great choice. I've got an older 70-210 f4 from my film days that works really well, but the vibration reduction and the extra length would be features I'd willingly give up that difference in speed for. VR won't help you stop motion in low light, but it will greatly...

    C02 question

I meant enough to matter in a bike tire. I'm speaking from a couple decades' experience as a cyclist, and 10 years as a bike mechanic. C02 does leak down. Air does as well, but not as fast. This was actually something we sat around chatting about on a slow day one winter, people who pay for...

    C02 question

It does freeze the valve. That's not the issue, though. Most bikes run Presta valves, which are a mechanical closure. They freeze partially open sometimes, but when I screw the valve closed it stops leaking. There's no regulator to speak of on an inflator... it simply seals and punctures the...

    C02 question

I have a question for all you guys and gals with Powertank setups... I use a C02 inflator for on-the-trail mountain bike fixes (a 16g cartridge will fill a bicycle tire perfectly), but after that fix, I need to deflate the tire and refill with air once I'm back home. If I leave the C02 fill...

    Finding a Camera

Not double, but 1.5x the budget: D3100 kit. Shutter lag - zero, for all practical purposes, compared to any P&S ISO - you said you don't care about it; with this you don't have to. Auto ISO works very well. Autofocus will be much faster and more accurate as well vs. any of the P&S cameras...

    FJ60 Engine Swap - 2F-E or 3F-E or Diesel

I would totally do the 2FE. There's no reason to do the 3FE in your 60. The only scenario I see that it would make sense would be if you had a tired 350k mile 2F and a low mile 3FE and you wanted to keep cost to a minimum. At 60k your 2F short block should be good to go for a long time still...

    Baby Carriers

We got a Belle carrier for the front (made in Colorado, very comfortable for both baby and parent, controls movement well. My son rode in it until he was close to a year and a half (we preferred it over a stroller for out and about around town where the backpack is too much)...

Purpose of Chain in Winch Accessory Kit?

Other common use is to pull something off the trail such as a tree trunk. It can be rigged tight enough that the tree doesn't slip when pulled lengthwise, and it doesn't mind being dragged between the trunk and the ground.

    My growing obsession with 80's...

Looks and sounds like a rig that will give you a LOT of great miles, and already has a lot of the first steps taken. Congrats on the purchase... welcome to the group. Hi, I'm Eric, and I've got a Landcruiser problem. No, not a problem with my Landcruiser; it runs great and never complains. A...

    80 Series vs. 4th Gen 4Runner. Thoughts?

"some" would have said heck yes and been right! There are lots and lots of early solid axled, locked, armored 4Runners that can beat the tar out of most of the Wranglers out there. And there are a lot of locked, armored Wranglers out there that can beat the tar out of most of the 4Runners...

    An Axe - Seriously?

The double bit axes were traditionally sharpened differently for the two blades. One side would be very finely honed for fast chopping in clear grained wood, while the other would be a larger edge angle for better durability chopping knots, near the dirt, etc. That's my understanding, anyway.

Reciever Mounted winch or hand winch

I wasn't suggesting that a winch in a cradle for a receiver was the better option there; just that the poster's solution won't always work. A hand winch or a robust line/rigging kit is important if you want to be sure you can pull yourself backwards out of a good stuck.

Reciever Mounted winch or hand winch

I'm sure most will think of this, but it bears mentioning: Often times a winch is needed because you're sunk to the frame rails. Pretty hard to run winch line under the vehicle in those circumstances. Backwards pull is still possible, but requires a lot more line/extensions, and a lot more...

The Family Daily Driver ExPo Rig Thread!

You sure she's not just a huge Nathan Fillion fan? I know my wife likes the show for the show's sake, but I know a couple OTHER guys' wives like the show for the sake of oogling Captain Reynolds. :PROFSheriffHL: Women can be so shallow. :)

    My growing obsession with 80's...

I would suggest that fuel economy won't be as big a difference as you think. you can likely pull down ~15 in a Cruiser, ~17-20 in a 4Runner (both close to stock). The other thing to consider, is that with an 80 you are getting a vehicle that (I think Scott described it this way) is a legacy...

    My growing obsession with 80's...

Tons of variables at work. Do you turn your own wrenches? I'm not as familiar with the FZJ as some guys on here, but they'll chime in with cost and things to add to the list. For most of these, it's not the part that's super expensive. It's the labor if you have to pay someone to install it...

The Family Daily Driver ExPo Rig Thread!

Don't forget the cheese factor! It was a show that was very willing to not take itself seriously. The whole totally-forget-the-steadycam thing, racking zoom and focus, having something happen and the camera has to pan super fast to catch it as if the cameraman missed his mark... Aside, do you...

I know, right? I think we've all had a Firefly moment showing a new project vehicle to the wife. :) Let me show you the rest. And-and try to see past what she is and onto what she can be. ... What's that, sir? Freedom is what. ... I meant, what's *that*? Oh, yeah, just step around that. I...

The Family Daily Driver ExPo Rig Thread!

I went 4Runner/Landcruiser. I've had a Toy reg cab, a 1st gen 4Runner, and now an FJ60. I think that for a broad-brush family expedition rig, an FZJ80 would be just about ideal. Third row seating if you have a big family, crazy offroad capability potential if your backcountry adventures look...
