    Fording Depth vs. Snorkel Height

At the risk of being branded a heretic... Do you really need a snorkel intake at the roof level? I mean, unless you're trying to assault a beach from a landing craft, how often are you intentionally crossing water that washes over the windshield of your vehicle? And, to be fair, I suppose...

    Photography tips for beginners

Uh, let's see. Photography 101... Shoot portraits with a longer lens; it makes people more attractive than being too close or using wide angles and makes it easier to blur the background. Stop the aperture down to make the background crisp (known as increasing the Depth of Field). Open it up...

    2007 Sequoia...aka The BigTree

This guy's jealous... It's on my list, but I've got some other mods in mind first. I'm probably going to do the coil-overs and shocks first (because it needs them anyway). Then spacers, wheels, and 33's. Those choices make sense regardless of how far I go with the mods. The bumper...

    Any recommendations on a Parka?

Hahaha...I live in Kentucky. I'm a retired Army First Sergeant... And I am not a Canadian. Military parkas are shells with liners that either zip in or button in. I think I can speak with some expertise on the matter without making that call.

    Any recommendations on a Parka?

I know what you mean! I spent a year in Edmonton one month about 4 years ago. Between the dump trucks hauling snow out of the city all night and the power boxes in the parking lots for crankcase heaters, I think I'll just wait until after the spring thaw in August...

    Any recommendations on a Parka?

You can retain body heat by building up layers and reducing the penetration of the elements. So, I opt for 3in1 systems with a zip in / button in liner that's a size or two too big. Add / remove fleece layers underneath, as needed. Look for waist cinch ties. I like the ties that go around...

Best route for wires from interior to roof for lights, antennas, etc?

I appreciate the replies. The roof rack feet is an interesting place to look. I also like the rear hatch door jamb with grommets, etc. I just don't want to run the length of the car from a dash switch and then back to the front of the roof for lights. I'm also not keen on a 1" hole for a CB...

Best route for wires from interior to roof for lights, antennas, etc?

So, how do you go from the engine compartment to the roof?

Question about using an RTT on campground

Why wouldn't you say: "I've got a roof top tent. I'd like a flat spot to park, but I don't need full service..."?

Best route for wires from interior to roof for lights, antennas, etc?

Title says it all: what's the best path to route all of those cables for driving lights, CB antennas, GPS antennas, etc? Hole in the roof or around a door seal? Thanks.

    Army Surplus Immersion Heaters

I remember a Drill Sergeant trying to light one in 1975 while in basic training. The only way to describe the sound is "FOOM." It knocked his hat off and a bunch of us did about a million pushups for laughing at him.

    Army Surplus Immersion Heaters

Used them to heat water to clean mess kits and such back in the 70's. Army did away with them in the early 80's. Pretty dangerous; required constant monitoring and tweaking. Essentially it drips gas into a fire in the lower "combustion chamber" that is immersed in water. If the fire gets too...

Yeah, we love Lodge cookware. We stop at the outlet between Chattanooga and Monteagle every time we pass by.

    Car Camping Stove

It looks like that one is no longer made, but I found one similar to it: http://www.cabelas.com/product/coleman-174-signature-series-instastart-8482-propane-grill-stove/1969880.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fproduct.jsp%3FproductId%3D1969880&categoryIds=104795280|581015880|104246280|

    Car Camping Stove

OH!! Got it. Well, it was just the fitting, so I thought it was just an adapter for a larger tank. Maybe I didn't look close enough. Well, that wouldn't be so bad. I guess there's no safety issues with refilling the small tanks?

    Car Camping Stove

Did I also mention that I don't want a propane tank hanging off of the outside of the car? I've been looking for a 5 pound horizontal tank that I can fit in the drawers of my sleeping platform. But, all things considered, I'm now leaning towards multi-fuel.

    Car Camping Stove

I'm about in the same phase - looking for a camp stove. My main dilemma is white gas, which can be bought in bulk virtually anywhere, and the propane gas models that use the wasteful, non-refillable cans. I hate the thought of disposing of the cans, but really don't want to transport...

    Sequoia Sleeping / Storage Platform

Well, we boondocked on the way back from our Christmas vacation. Little rest plaza east of Hot Springs, AR. The headroom thing wasn't even a "thing," as we pretty much went right to sleep, or tried to. We're not looking to build out a fully functional camper, just a sleeping platform. While...

Pup Tent? The only use I ever got out of my shelter half was as a base for the rest of my gear during a layout inspection. "Death Before Dismount" was our motto!!
