Say Goodbye to Your CB Radio

Don't start in with the "real overlanders" nonsense. You feel the need to point out that GMRS is primarily a USA service that's fine, but keep the gatekeeping to yourself.

Say Goodbye to Your CB Radio

GMRS already has designated repeater frequencies and setting them up is actually pretty simple. You turn to a repeater channel (15-22), enable the repeater function in the menu and off you go. It can be much easier than programming ham repeater frequencies because the pairs are pre-set within...

    The Camp 4x4 Bus - 1973 Suburban 8.1 Swap & Build

Yep, new place. Have done a decent amount of tidying up, but there's a fair bit more to do... eventually... And yeah, that's the Spectre air box. kind of big, but not excessively so. The Vintage Air kit is on its way, so I'm going to wait for that before I go cutting holes so I can see exactly...

    The Camp 4x4 Bus - 1973 Suburban 8.1 Swap & Build

That's awesome. :) As for the flange, I'll probably stick with the flat flange and use Sanderson's copper gaskets, then add a flex pipe right on the other side of the flange. Maybe throw a v-band on either end of that to make swapping it down the road easier.. IDK... we'll see what the exhaust...

    The Camp 4x4 Bus - 1973 Suburban 8.1 Swap & Build

Alright. I feel pretty good that I've exhausted all the options here (pun completely intended). I tried every header that from the previous post and they all were all pretty bad. And I can't seem to find anything elsewhere that purports to work and isn't more or less the same design as any of...

    Help me understand this

My understanding is that the Yaesu and Kenwood are the real choice. I've got a Yaesu 400 and I absolutely love it. They all have quirks of their own though. I know a lot of folks say they like the Kenwood's APRS implementation, but the deal sealer for me was the screen on the Yaesu. It is the...

    Help me understand this

This is all I was really getting at. There's plenty of confusion around the Chinese radios right now and what the FCC is saying about them.

    Help me understand this

For ham radio I see it as similar to a driver's license or firearm license - both require a test that's easy to pass with a minimal amount of effort. The level of effort involved and the taking of the test itself is enough to at least introduce the key concepts and get people thinking about the...

    Help me understand this

I'm a super strong believer that GMRS should be the next CB. The barrier to entry is low - pay $70 for 10 years - so pretty much everyone in a group should be willing to get a license. And even the $150 15W mobile from Midland should have ample range for strung out convoys. While access to...

Power Wagon on Snake Lake Trail, Tahoe National Forest

Nope, didn't winch at all for the whole thing. Got over that other section you high-centered on just fine too.

    The Camp 4x4 Bus - 1973 Suburban 8.1 Swap & Build

Well... strike 2. The Hedman tech suggested shorty (Hedman 62700) had a serious clearance issue with the #3 cylinder tube and the frame to the point where they couldn't even be installed. You can see in the lineup below that the 2nd tube overlaps the 1st tube... that's no good as it pushes...

Power Wagon on Snake Lake Trail, Tahoe National Forest

It was pretty bad a** by the time I ran that trail 1-tons, rear locker, front LSD, 37's, lifted... My "new" '73 Burb picks up where that one left off... definitely plan on going back to hit the trail once next year with the new and improved truck. :) Snake lake trail is the reason I plan to put...

Power Wagon on Snake Lake Trail, Tahoe National Forest

I brought my '87 Suburban through those 2 rocks. Squeezed through with an inch on either side, but bumped the rear wheels a little hard on the ledge and bounced to one side... ended up with a couple good bumps on the rear quarter panel from kissing the one on the right. par for the...

    The Camp 4x4 Bus - 1973 Suburban 8.1 Swap & Build

Yeah, I've considered doing the shave in the past. I've surprisingly never had much of an issue with the rear diff hanging up on stuff... I hadn't looked at the Sandersons, but looking now they seem to be just for cars. Didn't see any Chevy trucks on their application list. I had actually...

    The Camp 4x4 Bus - 1973 Suburban 8.1 Swap & Build

Alright... so the parts are rolling in. I got back Weds. night and of course couldn't wait to test fit the headers. Sadly, they're a no go. The long tubes are just too long. While it would appear the driver side could work after flipping the lower shackle bolt so the head was on the inside, the...

    The Camp 4x4 Bus - 1973 Suburban 8.1 Swap & Build

Not so much concerned about taking on water, though it would be nice to know EXACTLY when water becomes a concern. With the stock location you're kind of guessing. The truck is pretty damn tall at this point, between the 5-ish inches of spring lift and 1" body lift. More I'm just not a fan of...
