Got the rear axle all welded up and ready to assemble.
Before I get into that I would like to show you a couple of preparation step I took before welding it all up.
I am confident in my welding and my equipment.
However, I wanted to make sure I never had to worry about any of this axle junk so...
Not to keep beating a dead horse but I should also point out that for warmer weather they have a 30 degree quilt that only weighs 1lb 10.5 oz (or a little less than 740g)
Ok after a little digging that Outdoor Vitals quilt is 76 in long by 31 wide according to one of their videos that they posted on youtube.
That 31 wide measurement must be as measured folded over as a bag and not just the "blanket" size.
Otherwise it would not even wrap around my waist.
So 76x62?
Have you ever heard of Outdoor Vitals? They have this 20 degree underquilt thing.
https://outdoorvitals.com/product/outdoor-vitals-aerie-20f-down-underquilt-sleeping-bag/
It can function as an under quilt, a sleeping bag or just a big blanket.
It only costs $160.
I am going to get a couple to...
Well It's been a slow few weeks.
Winter and various other things have me down in the dumps.
Its been a little warmer around here lately so I have been making a conscious effort to get outside more rather than all cooped up in the garage.
Have to take a break every now and then.
Anyway...
Yeah this could be viewed as a prototype if you will and since I don't have any 3D drawing software anymore it's much more difficult to really lay it all out on paper.
My time out measuring parts and sitting at my computer drawing got me in the ball park but sometimes you just overlook things...
Tiny update.
Finally had a spare day to do some fiddlin' in the garage.
I have the sub-frame to the point that I could do some test fitting under the van.
It went almost as planned but a few oversights on my part led to a couple of modifications.
First I had to make a quick cut to clear...
Haven't been in the garage lately. I just got back from an 8 day trip to Colorado and with all the holiday junk and a couple other things I have not had to much time in the garage.
I do have 10 days off work coming up so I will be at it then.
I mentioned earlier that the gas tank will be a...
Yes with my transfer case I get the ever so important low range and, coupled with my axle choice, I will have 3 locking diffs
I also feel that all of these parts are much more durable, readily available and upgrade-able
I am running the subaru trans.
It will run to a transfer case that will then feed power to a custom solid axle front and rear.
As for the fuel tank, it will pretty much occupy any of the space between the frame rails that is not filled with transfer case or driveshafts.
Oh ok.
I guess I can put up a couple of things.
To be honest I have been trying to wait to post until I had the sub-frame and transfer case under the van but, as expected, everything is taking a lot longer than I wanted.
Mock this up. Design that. Have parts cut. order material. Twiddle...
I thoughgt I just saw something saying that vw was thinking about bringing the crafter to the US.
As a VW guy I am interested to see where that goes.
Also interested in your build.
The euro stuff always seems so much more efficient in design in my opinion.
Nope you didn't hurt my feelings any.
It is a legit concern and I wish I had a better solution.
However, as is always the case when starting with an existing vehicle, compromises have to be made and this is one of those cases.
I'm not going to dwell on it too much though.
It's at least as good...
Yeah once I sorted how tall the transfer case was I was concerned about how low it was going to hang.
This is why I shaved the case some and rotated it to get it as short as possible.
I even went so far as to install some button head bolts in a couple strategic locations to shorten it up by...
Some update action.
I have most of the laser cut parts in house.
Now I just have to start putting them together.
I have planned on working on it all week but I always get wrangled into something else.
I got the basic parts of my sub-frame so I thought I would do a little mock up to see how...
