I have HF in my Jeep for mobile ops, but at camp I put up a dipole or two (shared feed point) or soon to be linked dipole. I used a mast but could also easily throw a rope in a tree for the feed point.
I also have extension cables for the control head and mic so I can sit at a table outside the...
The largest linked repeater system in Oklahoma is on 440 and covers almost 1/2 the state. It one of the main factors for me getting a dual band radio. Besides being able to monitor more than one frequency. I know plenty who get by just fine with a 2m mono band radio. So pick your own poison.
The roof rack may be fine. VHF/UHF don't need a whole lot of metal to work well. It's close proximity to the metal roof may be an issue...may not.
If you aren't opposed to drilling a hole that would be the best option.
Once upon a time (May 2017) for a short while Rugged Radios sold a radio that operated on 134-174Mhz, 400-480Mhz, 26-33Mhz, and 47-54Mhz advertised as VHF, UHF, CB, and Ham for $578. The radio was advertised as 50 watts, but a friend spoke to a RR rep at an expo and they said when switched to CB...
I would think the ladder should be more than enough metal on it's own. You could always try making some ground radials for the antenna, see if that changes anything.
I have one 5/8 wave 2m antenna in the middle (more or less) of the roof of my XJ and another on the passenger rear corner of the roof. Maybe 2.5-3' apart and rarely have much of an issue. The one in the middle is for voice and the other is for APRS. I also have a 102" whip with an adjustable...
To add a little context here:
Mountain:
noun
a natural elevation of the earth's surface rising more or less abruptly to a summit, and attaining an altitude greater than that of a hill, usually greater than 2000 feet (610 meters).
As Cavanal hill is 1,999' elevation it' can't be any higher and...
Not so much anymore at $149.99 regular price, but still $119.99 if using the 20% off code.
The introductory price with code was a pretty good deal at <$90.
It's a bit on the expensive side but it fixes the no holes and no mag mount issue and you could run a smaller antenna as it would be higher.

Here is one that is just shy of 3': https://dpdproductions.com/products/gmrs-double-5-8-wave-mobile-antenna (I don't have any personal experience with them).
Welcome to the hobby.
All looks like good equipment. I don't have experience with any of the radios you propose so I won't comment.
The ARRL says it should be KC3NSR/VE3. You can say slash or stroke,
For VHF/UHF I wouldn't worry about the QSL card. If you wanted to I would make good notes about...
A small handful of us in the local Jeep groups have pushed for GMRS or ham to no avail. The groups still push CB and then complain about poor performance. I have kind of pulled back from pushing for better comms though as it seems the groups use CB more for playing music, farting into the mic...
Looks like I will be operating as a 1E this year. Just not feeling the whole club/fire station thing.
Since the radio is the Jeep I will deploy the "awning", set up my portable antenna and have a go at it.
While not a Yaesu my kenwood HF radio also takes a RJ-11/12 jack cable for the control head I believe (I have to run cables for both head and mic, one is an RJ-11 and the other is RJ-45).
I use a flat 6 wire telephone cable as an extension cable to operate while at camp as the radio is in the...
Nice Dave, glad GMRS is working out well for you.
If you really wanted to try and increase your range you could mount a mast on the side of the latter of your 5th wheel and then mount the antenna to the mast.
I use an extendable painters pole as part of my portable antenna mast, extended is 12'...
