Hold my Coffee ! another manual transmission swap thread

In my opinion concentric slave cylinders are solutions to a problem that didn't exist before they did. Not only do they have twice as many sealing surfaces as a standard slave cylinder but the sealing surfaces are also much larger which creates a greater likelihood of leaks. Where a normal slave...

Hold my Coffee ! another manual transmission swap thread

I would MUCH RATHER have an external slave. It can be changed in about 15 minutes. An internal slave requires pulling the transmission to replace it and usually trashes the clutch disc with leaking fluid.

Reliability of Chevy Astro van AWD

A throw out bearing interfaces between a clutch fork and pressure plate in a manual transmission. There's only one, so not sure why there would be a front and rear designation. You have a manual transmission in an Astro? Never seen that. Got pics?

    DIY Ujoint questions

User Java has a box truck conversion and has chronicled his horrendous experiences with Atlas on pirate4x4. I would be VERY hesitant to use them. Lead times are a hassle but waiting so long for the wrong parts more than once is inexcusable.

Keep in mind a propane tank can only be filled 80%. A 10 gallon tank holds 8 gallons of lpg max.

2wd E-350 Chinook upgrade to 4x4 using "F" series donor

Your donor needn't be v10 unless you're looking for engine parts too. Try parts shopping on car-part.com for cost comparison.

    Ford E-Series Rear Shackle Flip

I wasn't debating you. You said something unclear (longer, but not) so I asked for clarification. I appreciate that you replied. That reply was unclear (flatter, but not) so again, I asked for clarification. -Cheers

How did your penthouse top change your van?

I was shopping for a high-top when my SMB PH fell in my lap. I bit just cuz it checked every other box and the price was right. I mostly use my van as a cargo hauler or on-site tool storage. I like the PH for all the "down" reasons: fuel economy, low clearance, etc. When I do camp, I LOVE that I...

    Ford E-Series Rear Shackle Flip

Flatter than what? The add-a-leaf increased the arch of the leaf spring pack. The difference in length from one leaf to the next is what makes leaf springs progressive. Equal or nearly so leaf lengths cause large steps between spring rates. You're probably heavy enough and consistently so that...

    Ford E-Series Rear Shackle Flip

Longer than what? As I read it you kept the stock springs with the addition of an add-a-leaf, right?

Summer of '69- Econoline Poptop Resto-Mod

No, just swap alternator pulleys or buy an alternator with a V belt pulley. They're widely available.

Diesel vs gas engine for camping and General purpose

My 4.9 nice van weighs 7k. Runs 80 easy with the C6. My 4.9 junker is way faster with its M5OD. I bought it to swap the transmissions. The thread is about gas vs diesel for camping and general purpose, not towing my backhoe. Selling a van isn't camping. The general purpose of me buying my van...

Diesel vs gas engine for camping and General purpose

The 4.9 is actually quite heavy duty. It was the engine in UPS delivery trucks for 20 years. It was in F-6 dump trucks, airport tugs, stationary powerplants...basically applications the 5.9 Cummins took over in the 90s. They're commonly found with 250-350k miles running well. Without being...

Diesel vs gas engine for camping and General purpose

If you plan to cross the border, ULSD isn't available much in Mexico and beyond. Newer diesels "require" it. Diesels are noisy. My gas van is virtually silent. Seriously. People ask if it's electric. We're talking about a 1989 Ford, not a new hybrid or anything. It's just a well tuned 4.9 with...

    Real MPGs for your rig?

1989 E-150 2wd Sportsmobile Penthouse with just paneling and insulation, no interior fixtures. 4.9L, C6, 3.08 R&P, 225/75-16 tires. I keep it full of construction tools. Typical daily weight is 6-7,000 lbs. 17 mpg highway, 14 city. I drive 65ish on the interstate, just get to the speed she's...
