Van choice...balance load capacity and MPG

I really like my inline 6. It's not speedy but it's certainly steady. With even decent maintenance they're 300k mi engines. With stock size tires, 3.08 gears, and a C6 auto, I pull 17+mpg on the highway without trying. With just a couple mods and light-pedaling, I expect to break 20. I've hauled...

    Slow build- the vanagon replacement

I understand the tighter turning radius (traveling in a smaller circle) as a result of being able to turn the tires further before they rub anything (thanks to raised ride height)... BUT where'd you get a quicker ratio? Smaller steering wheel or different steering gearbox or a different length...

Van choice...balance load capacity and MPG

I disagree with the 4.6 in a vehicle the size of a van. Too little torque which is offset by deeper gearing which causes higher rpm which consumes fuel that would be unnecessary with a more appropriate engine. I've had the 4.6 in mustangs and trucks and a single cab 2wd F150 commuter was fine...

Van choice...balance load capacity and MPG

Tom, neither the 5.0L (302ci) or the 5.8L (351ci) were offered in the years you mentioned. I'd get the 6.8L V10 if you'll be loaded most of the time or the 5.4L V8 if you'll be cruising lightly loaded more often. The mileage differences aren't that great anyway and nobody ever said, "it's just...

Van choice...balance load capacity and MPG

A (1969 so pre-smog) high compression (good for efficiency) SBC with small spread-bore primary throttle blades (quadrajet) is gonna be pretty darn efficient. Manual trans? OD? Bet it pulls good vacuum with a mild cam and that its cruise speed (due to low gears) isn't beyond the aero envelope...

Van choice...balance load capacity and MPG

What's your stock 2001 E150 weigh? My 89 EB is 5k empty and doesn't have a v8, airbags, carpet, wiring behind the driver's seat except for tail, turn, and reverse lights, etc. Bet it's a comparative light-weight amongst modern E-150s.

It's plug-and-play. Just unplug the OE flasher, plug in the new one.

Van choice...balance load capacity and MPG

You're kidding right? There was no overdrive automatic in ford vans in 82 (would've been the AOD, came out in vans in 83). No EFI. Piston-style AC compressors were the norm and they were turned by v-belts. Almost no synthetic motor oils, gear lubes, etc... EPA ratings only go back to 84...

Looking at a 4wd van, need some advice

DING DING DING that's my guess as to the cause of your issues. Lots of guys running "stacked chips" back in the day had similar issues. Think about it: your scangauge doesn't have a battery so what powers it? PCM via OBDII port. Bet it's the same with your OBDII bluetooth module. Causing a...

    MG Metalworks Van Build

First, no 7.3 IDI in a SuperDuty (where 5.4 and 6.8 and 7.3 PSD were available). I don't think that's what you were saying just making it clear for those following along. Second, did your F150 and F250 have the same body-styles, transmissions, R&P ratios, tire sizes, etc? If not this is hardly...

AZ Astro Van project - slow build - advice welcomed 2004 AWD LT

Just use a solid-state turn signal flasher as opposed to an old-school thermal one. It'll blink the same speed even when bulbs are burned out though, just a heads-up. Got mine at O'Reilly's as a "heavy-duty" flasher for ~$15.

88 E250 EB Quigley - back in the van game

Yeah this is a big clue it's Quigley...the vans never had a transfer case so an "extension" was used to make the shorter cable work with the longer powertrain. I haven't looked at a diagram or anything but I'm not sure there's a speed sensor originally. My C6 (you should have the same) is...

88 E250 EB Quigley - back in the van game

This thread needs front suspension and interior pics. Awesome van. The short section of speedo cable might be a Quigley part. Mine's all one piece.

    Tiger Compact Van?

I like their Deck Van even better. It's like the van with a small truck bed (deck) on the back. They actually are legally driven on roads here in AR but only with farm tags and lots of legal hassles.

    The Mothership

I've heard good things about curtain-tracks.com and I think their flexible track will make its way into my rig. Although I think a cleaner, more practical system (easy to un-snap and throw in the washing machine for example) setup could be made in a van using whatever curtain...

The guy from behemoth? If you have manual hubs you'll get 2wd Low by engaging low range with the hubs unlocked. Done it many times with no problems.
