Yes, I did think you were kidding; obviously you were not. Thanks for that link, very interesting and another possibility.
Had to post a gratuitous beauty shot. This guy and his harem were guarding the trail to the monument. Couldn't get a good pic of all the beautiful females he had with him.
von Schmidt line, had to look that up. Best lead so far, seems to be a definite possibility as the Wikipedia entry indicates von Schmidt used stone markers in some cases. Will have to do more research on this.
BTW - how did you learn of the von Schmidt line? I thought I knew California...
GPS coordinates seem random. I assume a major intersection would be something like 40.000N, 120.000W?
A couple of my buddies suggested something related to the military. My admittedly limited experience with the modern military is that even something as apparently simple as a navigation...
Clampers - LOL! I thought about that but they usually leave some sort of plaque or marker, don't they?
I don't want to be too specific about the location. However, it's about the middle of the state not too far from the Nevada border.
A cairn or marker is what I thought as well, it certainly...
Took a short adventure recently to remote part of California's high desert. Was doing some exploring and came upon this:
Its obviously a stone monument of some sort, built from local rock found around the base. It's about 12 feet tall and 4 feet square at the base. It's extremely sturdy...
I never leave the jacks on when traveling. They weigh close to 100 lbs and I don't want the extra weight, secondly they hang down and are just looking to hit something and get torn off.
As far as stabilizing the truck, sounds like it could work. However you would need to be careful to avoid...
I camped for years in a 1994 2wd Explorer with no problems. Never got stuck and never needed recovery gear. Just bring along a healthy dose of common sense and be prepared to turn when the road/trail gets questionable.
OK - tin can beds of these trucks? Not sure what that means. Does the camper bounce up and down on the bed? Mine doesn't do that, it seems like a bad thing. Provide friction? Unclear about this as well. My spray-in bed liner is quite rough and the camper has not showed any tendency to...
The weight of your rig is in line with mine. I've got a Hawk on a GMC 2500HD and it tips the (truck) scales at about 8800 lbs fully loaded. The GVWR for my truck is 9500 lbs, surprised that yours is so much lower.
Don't think so. FWC installed my Hawk at their factory in December. No rubber pad. Tech guy made it very clear before I showed up that there should be nothing in the bed.
Thanks, my wife and I really enjoy it. We don't have the side dinette, we went with the basic rollover couch. We camp mostly in good weather and want to be outside as much as possible. Lots of storage room under the couch that is lost if you go with a side dinette.
IMHO the 3/4 ton (lifted...
Not quite the same but I've got a 2012 GMC 2500HD 4x4 6.0L gasser with a 2014 Hawk on board. Very nice package for my needs. Can run at 75-80 mph on the freeway and is reasonably capable off-road. Gas mileage is not great at 11-13 mpg. Would like a bigger fuel tank, with only 36 gals my...
Since this is the SMB forum you're probably gonna get more pro-SMB viewpoints, but here's my story.
I went through the same process and ended up with a truck and FWC, mostly based on cost, but other factors came in as well.
My truck is a GMC 2500HD 4x4 and I know a lot of folks will say it's...
2012 GMC 2500HD, 6.0L 4x4 extended cab with a 2014 FWC Hawk, 36gals gas, 26 gals water, 5 gals propane, food and gear for three days, my wife and me: 8680 lbs.
