Some neat ideas about the merits of solid mounts and temporary mounts. I love the idea of a Velcro mounted control head, but you've gotta use the right stuff. I've worked with some Velcro in the past that my agency sourced for a very particular use. Both the adhesive and the Velcro work like...
Not a whole lot of Gen 1 Tundras around here.

@Dougherty03: Not sure what you mean by radio service, and I haven't settled on an antenna, not yet. I am glad to hear, however, that I can use an antenna that doesn't stick thirty feet into the air above my rig.
@AlbanyTom: Thanks for the nod and the heads up. I haven't decided exactly where...
I got the license, I bought the H/T, learned a few things, picked a mobile radio, and am ready to pull the trigger on the required kit to make the install work.
I'm leaning towards an NMO mount in the middle of the roof of my truck. I've accepted the compromise that I'll sometimes have to take...
Go to repeaterbook.com and look there. If you have an iOS device, there's a repeaterbook app that will return with a repeater list based on your location.
National simplex is 146.52, btw.

Radio: Baofeng UV-5R, using adapter pigtail and magmount Tram 1185 for a sorta-mobile rig for now. Doing research on an actual mobile rig for the truck.

Finally made my first contact on a local repeater today. That was cool.
I have the Camburg UCA's on my 05 Tundra. Last night when we found a place to set up camp, I wiped the uniballs clean and shot them with some WD-40 white lithium spray. Squeak is long gone. Saw on some other forums that this can become a regular bit of PMCS, depending on your locale and the sort...
Heads up: I cleaned the ball joints and then sprayed WD-40 white lithium all over that mother and let it sit overnight. Squeaking is GONE. Seems this will be a bi-weekly or monthly thing, now.
Any fix to the creaking in your front end? I've been having a helluva hard time finding out the source of mine. Happened with the suspension upgrade, as well.
OP Delivers!
As promised, some pictures of the truck and rack with everything bolted on.
The awning is now mounted directly to some bent flat bar stock that my brother welded on. There is one bracket each on the front and the rear hoops of the rack.
The awning now sits closer to the truck...
Thanks, Derek! It can definitely be used as a limber rack, but it sits a couple inches lower than the roof of the cab, so there are some length limits on what can be carried up there. I still have to figure out how to easily get the RTT on and off, though.
Okay, it's been some time since I've posted an update. About a month ago I bought an All Pro Off-Road APEx bed rack to replace the Thule Xsporter that I've had for about a year. I ordered it as a weld-together kit to save on labor ($100) and freight (don't know how expensive that would have...
