Question about expedition vehicles in Canada

Re bringing in box on US homologated chassis: No, by comparison getting a box installed by Unicat was simple. I ended up paying duty (2.5% then and now, who knows in the future?) at a US seaport. If I had been smart and shipped to Halifax and then crossed my quiet remote land border…. I was...

Question about expedition vehicles in Canada

Re 6x6: They’re huge unwieldy, expensive etc. But RWS (rear wheel steering) can make them a lot more “wieldy”. For a price. Paul Nutzfahrzeuge in Passau could probably retrofit RWS to most chassis. Not that I’d seriously recommend 6x6. https://paul-nutzfahrzeuge.de/zetros-8x8-ta/?lang=en

Unimogadventures - Our build and travel thread

Hello Iain. If you’re running XZLs, I think I mentioned a few years ago that a Michelin (military) tire engineer I met at a exhibition told me that Michelin military tires need to be kept <75C. I keep track with the CTIS pressure display.

    Earthroamer sell off?

Other than liability insurance, what are the monthly expenses associated with owning an expensive toy that only a deranged person (there’s a pandemic of that) would buy on installments?

    Understanding MRAP

I think my wheels on my U500 might be the 62161s (it’s on another continent). 90mm offset. Work perfectly with factory CTIS. And factory beadlocks, which is very important reason to have this type wheel.

    Understanding MRAP

I put MRAP Hutchinsons (20x10”) on my U500 Unimog and the results are totally satisfactory. Please be specific about what size tires you want to run. Presumably with internal bead locks, since that’s a massive advantage of 2 piece bolttogether wheels as opposed to alternatives. In June I was...

    Is there life without propane?

Ditched propane cylinders and stove for induction. But you want lots of batteries (840ah@12v in my case) and solar panels (950w nominal). And 2 x 45a dc to dc chargers. And of course Webasto for heat and hot water. Using electricity for heating in a camper is crazy. IMHO

modern diesel for overlanding in developing countries - post your solutions

Yes. If the external emission system (exhaust components beyond turbo) are deleted (temporarily if one wishes), AND if proper lube oil is then used, the high sulfur (rare these days: Bolivia, Peru, Venezuela, Egypt, Iraq/Iran/Syria and maybe a handful of other countries) fuel actually lubricates...

modern diesel for overlanding in developing countries - post your solutions

The S (sulfur) oxidizes to SO2 and SO3 in the combustion chamber. These compounds are potent electron acceptors (acid precursors). The latter in particular forms sulfuric acid when it encounters a water molecule, which is abundant in the combustion chamber since most of the the H atoms fo to...

modern diesel for overlanding in developing countries - post your solutions

And the remainder (in a deleted engine) don’t apply IF using a high SAPS oil: high ash, high TBN, a la ACEA E4/MB228.5 specification. I can explain further in all the detail you require if you wish.

For Sale WEBASTO AIR TOP EVO 40 Diesel heater $1000

Too bad. If you didn’t buy the high altitude version, I know a very analog workaround to adjust any Webasto for altitude. Or any other diesel heater.

MB Oil Spec OM366 LA, Fully Synthetic?

I have extensively researched this. To the point of having multiple textbooks about the subject. With the OM366LA, the best oil would be 228.5, followed by 228.3. You do NOT need to use low SAPS 228.31/51, and it’s actually inferior when using higher sulfur fuels. One can still easily source...

Roof Racks/Branch Guard on Total Composite Box?

This is what Unicat added to my roof before trip to Africa. And it’s a good thing they did, there’s a 72km totally overgrown truck in Central Kalahari Game Reserve from Xade Entrance to Piper Pan that would have removed solar panels. They seem to be L pieces that are mounted flush to the roof...

    Best Expedition Rig?

Does it need to be registerable in a US state? How old are you? And what’s your budget? And re Unimogs: it’s true that they absolutely cannot and should not be driven at 70-85mph on interstate highways. Which are pretty unique to USA. But the main issue with driving them long distance is the...

Hierarchy of hard sided campers that handle the snow/winter?

The relatively standard 60mm thick wallboard material that Unicat uses (3mm fiberglass outside, 2mm inside, 55mm solid urethane foam in between) is 0.44w/sq m-deg C insulation rating. For those that are unwilling to do the simple conversion themselves, that’s R12.9. I think TC uses similar...

    Diesel Coolant heater sizing question

Unicat told me that an oversized heater leads to more rapid soot/carbon buildup in the combustion chamber, which can cause premature malfunction (at exactly the wrong time of course), necessitating a rebuild or even replacement. Because it spends too much time at the lowest heat output; OTOH...

    New 70 series

Arc tan (.985/1.3) ~= 37 degrees Your “assumption” that ρ(h), density function of entire vehicle with respect to height off the ground, is a constant is (to be kind and diplomatic) the most ridiculous engineering assumption I’ve seen in a very long time.

    New 70 series

Your “physics” calculations fail to account for motor, drivetrain etc being much lower than half the height; frame, fuel tanks; winches; water tanks in camper, batteries all are at bottom of camper. Or lower. So, the COG is ~1.3m high, and the track is 1.97m wide. Therefore, the tip over angle...
