    Truck vs SUV for towing

A good friend of mine said, "I don't know how you live without a truck. Baffles me to no end!"

    Truck vs SUV for towing

Isn't pretty much everything discussed in this forum a "want?" No one needs to overland or camp or even drive! So, yes, this is most definitely a want. It's a matter of how much do I want it given the cost and other tradeoffs. That said, thanks for the input on pros and cons. I think there are...

Impressions of the current Frontier Pro-4x?

The current generation has been out a couple of years now. I've read some reviews and watched some videos and I even test drove a 2023. It's on my list for a variety of reasons for my next adventure vehicle (my reasons for picking it would include price, size, adequate capability for me, I kind...

    Truck vs SUV for towing

For those who overland or just generally travel and camp with a small (teardrop size or off-road cargo size) trailer, do you prefer to use a pick-up truck or SUV and why? If you use a truck, mid-size or full-size? Does the truck have a cap or soft-topper or bed rack? If SUV, what kind? I...

After 8 years in a full size, moving back to a mid-size - Recommendations?

Not to my butt and legs! 😂 The Tacoma seat is low to the floor and short front to back, so the support is limited. It’s like being in a low slung sports car but with crappy seats. Been a while since I drove a gx but I remember the position being more normal. And the 4Runner is definitely...

After 8 years in a full size, moving back to a mid-size - Recommendations?

I’ve been testing all the mid sized vehicles (trucks and SUVs) and have a few thoughts. I plan to buy within a year, after I test the new offerings coming in 2024. Keep in mind I’m new to 4x4 and I’ve never had or driven a full sized. I’m also in Colorado and generally also prefer suv format. I...

Is the roof tent trend over?

I hope so, because I’d like to try one and would love a bargain on a used one. I really haven’t looked on CL but now that I perused this thread I might check. Of course it wouldn’t work very well on my car (Outback, not the Wilderness). But I have to say that I still see them A LOT in...

    portable gas fire pit

We recently bought the Outland Living Fire Cube. It's a little smaller than their fire bowl and square which makes it easier to pack. We considered the Lavabox, Ignik, and other similar options, but this won out for us. We just used it on a weeklong trip in New Mexico (no fire bans, but we opted...

    For packing clothing...

Great idea. This kind of thing will work well in our trailer.

    Mountain Bikes

Not a bad idea. Mine ride on the roof of my vehicle, fork mount, wheels inside (but I’d like a solution to put the wheels on the roof separately). However, I’ve seen at least one camper van with a slide-out solution under the bed. The slide out came out the back barn door and allowed up to four...

The Toyota Land Cruiser Is Coming Back To America

And this will very likely be me. I’ve resisted a a real 4x4 till now, mostly due to mpg and lack of features and luxuries in many of them. This LC may solve that for me. I would not even contemplate the larger LC.

OnX GPS, Gaia GPS, All Trails or other for hiking and public land boundaries

I do all those things and use Gaia. Get it via Outside + and you’ll also get AllTrails Pro and the various media sites.

The Toyota Land Cruiser Is Coming Back To America

Guilty as charged! A few years ago, before I really knew anything about this segment of vehicles, but was just getting interested, I saw a Toyota suv all kitted up (lift, rack, rotopax, shovel etc) for sale in someone’s driveway not too far from me. I thought it was weird that someone would do...

The Toyota Land Cruiser Is Coming Back To America

Towing is as much about cooling as it is about power and torque. The extra load on the engine and transmission creates heat, which must be dissipated.

Upgrade my Subaru Outback or trade it in?

The new Land Cruiser is exactly what got me interested in this again. On paper it seems about perfect for me. I’ve test driven just about every option and the only one I thought I could stand for daily driving was a GX. Seems like the LC would be somewhat similar but with much better mpg.

Upgrade my Subaru Outback or trade it in?

I've got a '21 Outback Touring XT with minor mods (AT tires, skid plate, Ralitek rear springs). It has served me well towing a teardrop and exploring in Colorado and Utah. And it's absolutely fantastic as a daily driver (fast, pretty nimble, quiet on highways, good mpg). But there are definitely...

    Fireroad exploring vehicle ?

I have an Outback XT and they are perfect for this. I’m in CO and spend a lot of time on dirt roads (towing a teardrop too) and it’s great. It has its limits compared to a real 4x4 though. Maybe cramped with three kids but might work. If he’s OK with that size the Mazda Cx50 might also work.

The Toyota Land Cruiser Is Coming Back To America

Where are folks seeing MPGs for this new Land Cruiser? Or what are people basing their estimates on? I’ve seen 27 mpg in this thread, 30 mpg in another forum. That seems high to me but I ain’t no expert.
