For mileage, first install a better exhaust and intake. The turbo down pipe on those was an absolute joke. You may have to modify the cab slightly to get a good one installed. After that a slight hop-up for more power helps. It's odd that diesels get better mileage with more power.
Then...
For those truck types, I think the most flexible is to mount a light weight flat bed with under bed tool boxes. Then you have a blank canvas to mount a camper. There are many, many flatbed mfgrs. that cater to these trucks and will build to custom sizes.
I started with a RAM 2500, a Protech...
I'd say not too much, but the wrong kind and poorly aimed. Everyone seems to have their fog lights turned on, except in fog. I can tell that many have low mounted spot lights. In that location they are mostly useless except for blinding other drivers.
Bajadesigns has done some research on...
There's trouble with that thinking. It's not a true vertical load. It's a combo of vertical and a twisting load due to it hanging off the back.
If you're just hanging a wheel, it will probably be ok. Plus a motorcycle, not so much.
If you can sort through the pile of tubes and find one with the seam in just the right spot.. then it would work, sure.
MOG wasn't going full length with the slot, so that what I was addressing.
Sure that works, the example that I'm using above has that design. But, you need a good outer tube with no seam inside. There are a few. I'm probably going to use 'Receiver Tube' for truck hitches. It is 2.03 x 2.03 inside and the internal weld seam has been ironed out. It has 1/4" wall and...
Stainless is sexy. But, it's weak, prone to fatigue cracking and hard to weld.
Plain CRS (cold rolled steel) is much stronger and easy to weld and form (and fix in the field). Channels rolled from CRS plate is very strong for the weight and it's straight. Not commonly available, so more...
OK, here's some more. Not sure where this pic came from. I'd like to know more about this build.
This is close to my ideal design. I have to come off the frame only and not touch the house. This shows what the frame would look like with the narrow spacing. Although light, the frame looks a...
I did a lot of design work to make my own pop-up flat bed camper. By the time I found and bought small pieces of material and all the special little parts, it would have taken me years to assemble it. I'm an Mechanical Engineer, Mechanic and Certified Welder in Aluminum.
Instead I just took...
I need to carry a light-ish motorcycle on the back of a FUSO FG (Earth Cruser) and I'm looking for ideas. The motorcycle will be less than 500 lbs, I'm getting a second spare wheel and tire so those will be on there also, maybe 100 lbs each. Max weight 1000 lbs. This is going to see a LOT of...
Thinking of adding storage below the center seat on my 2013 Ram Club Cab. There's a huge dead space between the floor and cushion. I'll probably make a sheet metal box for that space and put a stock looking cushion on the top. The stock arm rest is good, so I'll remount that. Hope to come up...
The stock bed is designed to carry the load low, with no up lift. A tall camper and a lot of off-road will really work that sheet metal. My 2001.5 Dodge had only 6 - 3/8 bolts. The newer 2013 long bed used 8 larger bolts, maybe 10 mm. It took some time to adapt the flatbed to the almost flat...
If you like the FourWheel camper and need something more custom, take a look at All Terrain Campers in Sacto. Everything they build is custom, said they have never done the same thing twice.
Also, what about doing a flat bed instead of a service body. Huge improvement in interior size and...
On sway bar disconnects - seems you could easily cut the sway bar in the center and weld on a couple of levers and a support sleeve. Then it would be just one bolt to disconnect it and let the levers swing past each other.
My best tip: don't sell your riding gear. Keep one complete set, just in case. You may want a ride again.
Then, in seven years, if you haven't used it, throw it all out. If you can.
Yup, Dave here. I like this setup. I've been dreaming about my last RV build. Mitzi FUSO or an NPR with fourwheel drive.
Do you have any more detail on how much work to put in the front axle? Would the axle work with a diesel?
The camper looks great. Is it painted or skinned with metal...
