Grassland, in your opinion how does the 3.7 do in off road conditions. What I mean is that at lower RPM, moving through uneven terrain, do you have adequate torque? Do you have to give it more RPMs to get through hills and rough spots ?
Also, has the 3.7 ever felt lacking at highway speed?
Speaking of regular cabs.... I think a regular cab 6.5ft bed is a great looking truck! The 09-14 Regular cabs look better than the generation before or after IMHO. The 04-08 has that weird short door with the access door behind. The 15+ looks sort of chopped off at the back of the cab, kind of...
Todd n Natalie, thanks for the link to that build thread. If you google "Overland F150" there are only 2 trucks that will pop up consistently, that Brown supercrew above , and a Red regular cab. Now google "Overland Tacoma" and dozens of real and wanna be real builds pop up!
Best
Grassland thanks for the advice and the picture. That is a great looking truck! Has a very clean look with the color matched camper shell and roof rack. I like that you used the stock wheels. No need to spend money on stuff just for looks if what you have already performs well.
I am starting to...
Currently, I have no plans to do any regular towing. I don't own a boat, enclosed trailer or camper. Because of that, I'm not focused on the engine with most power or potential. I do want the most reliable motor, so let me know your thoughts if the 3.5 has proven to be more durable with higher...
Responding to a few things you folks have mentioned....
I will certainly look into the skid plate options, including the gas tank. Thanks for the tip.
I really like the Idea of the Bilstein lift/level because it uses shocks instead of a spacer. A spacer can work just fine , but it seems like...
Thanks for the tip regarding skid plates for the transmission and t-case. The "belly" on full size trucks is a bit lower than the midsize trucks.
I plan to get the 5.0 v8. I know Ecoboost owners are happy with there choice, but my preference is for the n/a engine. As for a trim level, I like...
I am currently looking to purchase an F150 Supercrew of the 2009-2014 bodystyle. I'm interested in ideas and suggestions as to how these trucks can be setup and built for Overland use.
Here are some specifics just to give everyone an idea of what I might need. I plan to use the truck to reach...
As the OP, I feel like I should jump back in. I thought the thread was winding down, so I thanked everyone for there input and moved on. Guess I shouldn't have wandered off! Based on the input gathered here, and my own observations, here are my thoughts:
*The Tacoma is a better dedicated trail...
Ok, guess I have the answers I needed.
In order to be respectful to the moderators, I should probably move along to the Domestic Full Size area.
I enjoyed having this discussion with everyone.
Regards
I'm relatively new here so forgive me for this question.
If the F150 is clearly the better choice , then why is the Portal and most Overland media full of fully built Tacomas??
Thanks for all the input and responses.
The F150 is going to work better for most of my off road road needs, my wallet and my Daughter's car seat.
When you look at the two of them, the F150 just seems like it would have a big disadvantage off road because of its size!
I'm no small guy at 6'4" and 235lbs. The Tacoma cab is snug but not uncomfortable during my test drives. I didn't try it with a child seat in the back.
After looking at multiple used Tacoma's and F150's lately, I'm probably going for the F150. I say probably because I have not found the exact truck I'm going to buy just yet. When the right deal pops up I'm ready to pull the trigger.
If I was looking for something just for my personal use to...
An answer to a question someone asked a while back. I think a small enclosed trailer (4x6 or 5x8) will be in my future. It will only be loaded with Fishing and Hunting gear, not heavy stuff. For occasional use how does the Tacoma 4.0 handle a trailer that size?
Clarifying that I'm looking at used trucks, probably 2015 or older with 70k miles or so on em.
I appreciate everyone's input. It sure seems like I am being pointed in the direction of a full size. That's a real surprise to me because I always assumed a Tacoma was THE Overland truck!?
After...
One advantage I feel the Tacoma has is reliability. The F150 for the last decade and a half has been up and down regarding both their gas and diesel motors.
On paper the Tacoma has better approach, departure, and breakover angles. I would think this would give them the advantage over the F150...
A Tundra, F150, Ram ect. are all full size trucks.
I was just curious if you guys and gals could offer a different perspective as to the advantages of Tacoma over a full size.
.
I have my eyes on a crew/double cab because occasionally I may have to put a child seat back there to pick up or carry my Daughter to daycare if my wife is unable to.
Whatever truck I decide on, will not be dedicated to the use described above. Nor will it be a daily driver bc I drive a paid...
