Looks like an awesome trip. Did the red spider mites bite everyone's skin right at the water level. We were there 10 days after you on a moto trip had a good soak, got quite a few bites, but worth it.
Just a thought- but have you checked the pitman arm for wear? Usually though its obvious as you have that dead spot in the steering where you can turn the wheel and inch left or right with virtually no effect.
I'll 2nd a vote to consider a 4th gen.
I have an 03 V8 with 275k on the clock, including a TRD Supercharger since 4k. I have owned this since new and Its been a very reliable truck and fun to drive.

Don't get me wrong that is a rad van, I'd certainly drive it, but is has a certain look. If I saw that parked in the woods I'd give it a wide berth as surely there is an ax murderer in there. No one is ever going to consider stealing from it, should you go for a hike and leave the van...
