    Canadian Disco 2 Build

Good job! I'd go with paint rather than LineX too - I think the rough finish would spoil the looks. And yes, you may as well cut off the lashing eyes, IMO.

    Winch Fairlead Poll

While I like the versatility, I must say that arrangement leaves a lot to be desired from a basic safety point of view. The winch itself has too many degrees of freedom, so it is more likely to slip lengthwise or in some other unpredictable way; any inspection of or adjustment to the winch or...

Dunes vehicles pollute air, study says

A "scientific" study to me implies that it has been published by a reputable scientific journal, and been peer reviewed. There doesn't even seem to be any mention of who actually carried out this "study", let alone the methodology, or links to the data.

Decent Deal on ARB Snatch Block

That seems a bit odd, though. Surely you'd test several to destruction??? As for burning out three new winches doing so, c'mon! When the winch stalls, surely you stop? And then just use a couple of snatch blocks. That part's not rocket science!

Decent Deal on ARB Snatch Block

Props to ARB for giving both figures! That alone is worth paying a premium.

Decent Deal on ARB Snatch Block

Hi Marc, So what are the correct ratings for each of them? (Breaking and working loads, if posssible). Cheers, Michael...

Decent Deal on ARB Snatch Block

Yes, that was my understanding. But Daniel Bongard from ARB (Aus) is confusing me. Yes, the 9000 has a quoted breaking strength of 38,500lbs, but the site he linked to (indicating a 30,000lb breaking strength) is picturing the the standard ARB block, not the 9000. So is Daniel saying the...

Decent Deal on ARB Snatch Block

When you say "rated", that surely can't be the breaking strength? The heavy duty ARB is 38,500lbs (breaking strength) and 19,800lbs working load. The standard ARB is 30,000lbs breaking strength, so presumably 15,000lbs working load. If the T-Max uses a similar 50% margin, it seems to be heavier...

Yes, it's funny, but must be photoshopped.

    Leaving Winch in Neutral?

The big rotary type probably only makes sense if you want to use it to manually control two batteries (which I did). The other types are physically much smaller, and cheaper too, other things being equal.

Decent Deal on ARB Snatch Block

I was amused by these two quotes from the report: So what were they measuring? What was the point of the strain gauge, if, with the same load, it gave completely different readings?

Decent Deal on ARB Snatch Block

I agree. This test was the subject of quite a bit of controversy here in the UK. I believe it was commissioned by the UK distributors of Milemarker hydraulic winches, and was set up to illustrate why, for any long pulls, a hydraulic winch is so much better than an electric. IIRC, the agents for...

    Canadian Disco 2 Build

Nice job on the welding! And thanks for posting the build in detail - good info. It strikes me you're planning a lot of weight hanging out far behind the rear axle - big spare, h/d bumper, swing-out carrier, tools, jerry cans... It won't be kind to your suspension. I know the options are...

Decent Deal on ARB Snatch Block

Most full-size vehicle recover winches quote a proper line pull rating, which is the maximum nominal pull on the cable on the first layer. I say nominal, because on an electric winch it is impossible to estimate the torque spike at the moment of stall-out. So the rating is the maximum load that...

Decent Deal on ARB Snatch Block

I presume the rating of snatch blocks (e.g. 30,000lb breaking strength for the standard ARB snatch block) refers to the double-line pull? (For a 180deg pull, the sheave will be under about twice the load the winch is exerting). So that's not much of a margin for a 12,000lb winch, and no margin...

    Leaving Winch in Neutral?

I'm curious too. I suppose one might say that the more serious the accident, the less difference a fire would make, and take that to its logical conclusion! :)

    Canadian Disco 2 Build

Yes, and they had a proper dual circuit (one circuit to all 4 wheel, the other to the front only), rather than a single, diagonally split system. And don't forget the Boge Hydromat self-levelling unit in the back axle wishbone. It's how they managed such supple suspension without losing too...

    Canadian Disco 2 Build

Sorry about that! But consider it a temporary digression... I like the big RRC windscreen too - for some reason when they designed the Discovery they made the top of the roof bend down to meet the glass. (I think they had old Sherpa van windscreens in stock, and decided the Disco was a good...

    Leaving Winch in Neutral?

There's no accident so bad that a fire when it stalls out won't make it worse...

    Leaving Winch in Neutral?

I'm not sure about that particular one. The one I picked up with a similar rating, was on Ebay, new, for about £25 + P&P. I'd guess they'd sell through a store at twice that - say $80 all in? That is a guess though. (And there is a huge variation in amperage ratings - most are only 175A...
