Thanks! I have a full size identical spare that I keep in the bed. I rotate it in every 5k-ish miles at oil changes. As for recovery/rescue , I brought with me-
-extra bottle jack and a Pro Eagle jack, jackstand
-Maxtrax (2 sets)
-tree saver/assorted winch accessories
-extra fuel...
Have you driven the 4Runner yet? I owned 3 JKU’s in various forms from stock to very built and loved them as the most fun vehicles that I’ve driven. Road manners weren’t great, space was tight, but they were FUN and I’ve never had more confidence to go anywhere. I did drive my last from NY to CO...
I guess that depends how perfect you need it. I looked at a bunch of Leer and ARE caps on different trucks and I always found something that I didn’t like. I got this one adjusted twice at the shop that installed it but there is still a very slight misalignment on the driver’s side rear tailgate...
If you’re set on a grill instead of a stove type option, something like this might be the way to go. Pretty compact with no charcoal fuss. I don’t have one yet but have been checking them out.
Stock gears and suspension. I had to do some minor plastic trimming for clearance, and I still get a really slight sidewall rub on the sway bar only at full lock of the steering. It’s easy to avoid and a non issue. That said, I‘m not rock crawling or flexing the crap out of the suspension too...
To answer a couple questions about the cap and rack setup-
The cap is a Leer 100RCC, which is one of their reinforced models that can support more weight. I ordered it with the flip up side 'windoors' that are super useful instead of climbing through the back to get at everything up front. The...
I was reading before the trip how unpredictable the weather could be so tried to be prepared for the worst. Luckily for most of the trip, there was only a dusting of snow every couple nights with a heavier storm thrown in here and there. More accumulation up high in the mountains, but that only...
Thanks! This will mostly be a pic thread so you're in luck there. Anything in particular you'd like to know or see with the cap setup? I'll get some detail pics up soon of the setup
The mountains of Wyoming were really showing off with a light dusting of snow, and making the truck look tiny. A run in with the beasts of the river beds made me feel a little uncomfortably small as well.
This area definitely deserves another drive at some point. Headed East for the 32+...
A back track and exit through the West Entrance took me into ID and then over finally over Teton Pass. The truck handled the pass with zero issues and temps barely climbing. Welcome to Wyoming-
Photography was a good part of this trip so the iconic locations were knocked off the list- Oxbow...
We both aren’t too big on crowds and tourist attractions, so we set out the next day with no destination in mind. Getting lost in the miles of mountain forest roads through Northwest Montana was the goal and one that was easily achieved.
Leaving GNP, and heading the truck South through...
The incoming flight landed without a hitch, and now plus 1, myself and the girl headed to our accommodations just outside of Glacier National Park. Our first drive into the park yielded some sensational views-
In sync with my arrival, the East side of Glacier got hammered with a freak early season blizzard dropping about 4 FEET of snow. Luckily for me and my incoming passenger, the West side only got a few inches of the crazy mountain weather. I knew I was taking my chances traveling to this area at...
September into October 2019-
(also posted in the Overland Trip Reports section)
It’s impossible to go online these days in the world of overlanding and social media without being inundated with beautiful pictures of built up rigs and backdrops of majestic mountains. Being born and raised in New...
I've owned this truck for a little over one year at this point and have racked up 30k miles so far. As it sits now, the PW is a mild build on 17" AEV salta wheels wrapped in 37" Toyo MT tires, and carrying a leer 100RCC cap with Rhino Rack pioneer platform out back. It seems like there has been...
I got lucky with 2 mornings of moose hanging around the same area. They were super cooperative and not skittish at all (we still kept our distance). The elk rut was in full swing with bulls bugling and chasing cows, but unfortunately they all were a long ways off so no great pics from them.
