I’ve had the habitat for a little over a year and still love all the room it has. I looked at the Vagabond and GFC at Expo West and they are both good options, but I prefer the added room the Habitat gives you. Set-up is very quick and even by myself, I can take down the Habitat in about four...
I would go with a 50qt, holds a lot and easier to move about than the larger ones. We have an ARB 50 and have been out for a two weeks with, resupplied after one week - but I think that was just to get more beer.
There is a thread on TacomaWorld on the Habitat - a few people did a DIY bug screen - https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/at-habitat-pictures-ideas-aaand-bs.532519/page-27
I looked at both the FWC and AT habitat and asked myself the same questions as you did. I found truck campers to be too cramped for me and I like a more open style. I also think the Tacoma is too small and underpowered for a camper, and at 320 lbs, the Habitat doesn't change the handling much...
In either case, you have to cut holes into the bed - but in the former the holes are under the heater? I love my Habitat and thought about the heater, but didn't really want something fixed in the truck bed. But after a few really cold nights in Anza Borrego in December, I'm rethinking my needs...
A few thoughts on where we are going for storage with our Habitat. We finally had a chance to have it out for an extended 2+week trip to Joshua Tree and Anza Borrego - prior to that most trips were 2-6 days. our only storage system has been plastic storage boxes, which I find to be a pain, but...
I don't think I read when and how long you are going, but I would skip the Los Angeles. to San Francisco - parts of Pacific Coast highway are closed due to mudslides and it will be a while before it opens, but there are detours around it. It's a nice drive and towns to stop in while heading...
One question about your criteria - how long do you expect to stay in the same place? 300 days is a lot, but if you're staying in one place for a week so, that might change recommendations.
Not sure if I should post this question here or tacoma section, but I have a 50qt ARB which is great, also just had an AT Habitat installed on my Tacoma (which is better than great) and took it up to Oregon for a week with wife and dog. I kept getting asked to pull the ARB onto the tailgate so...
Subscription boxes are great for some things - consumables such as food and beverages, non-consumables with short lives such as kids toys/games, pet toys, books, etc. I don't see it working with overlanders - everything is very personal, and all of us, aside from being pretty opinionated, tailor...
They have a short video that shows how it is all done. I hadn't heard of them before this post and their stuff looks pretty good. Company is in Truckee, CA only a couple hours away from me - maybe a day-trip and will report back...
I have an ARB 47 liter and it's great - very quiet and efficient. Most people I've talked with about fridges either have the ARB or the Engle and they are both great choices.
That is the Tacoma Habitat by AT Overland and can be seen at http://adventuretrailers.com/campers/toyota-habitat/
I'm on the waiting list and hopefully I'll have mine before summer ends.
Great set-up - I'm in the process of outfitting my Tacoma, though I'm starting with an AT Habitat. Your Goose Gear looks perfect, but wondering what was your approximate cost for all of their hardware?
I read on some earlier posts that AT would be taking orders on 3rd Gen Habitat sometime in May. Has anyone been placed on the list? I've emailed them a few times, but haven't heard back - I imagine they are pretty swamped with 2nd Gen builds right now.
