Using 'shipping wheels' to fit van into container instead of RORO

I don't see a whole lot of improvement over shipping wheels with skids. When I had mine cut, I only had 2" of clearance from the lowest suspension component to the ground. In some cases this will be the brake rotor, or the front low balljoint. Regardless there may be an additional loading...

Using 'shipping wheels' to fit van into container instead of RORO

The container floors are solid oak or similar. They get blocks screwed onto them, and forklifts drive on them. I would not be worried about damage.

Using 'shipping wheels' to fit van into container instead of RORO

I have done this. I can't find a photo right off, but I just had some 1/2" steel plate plasma cut into a manhole cover like thing. They had almost no traction, so getting up a ramp into the container required a pull through. They did stack pretty compact, though they were heavy. Another...

    New van, new adventures

Thanks for keeping us up to date. Glad to see another van getting good use. I didn't see it mentioned, but if you don't have the tools to air down, and a compressor to air up, you are not really prepared to drive on sandy stuff. Air pressure is the #1 task on the soft stuff recovery list, and...

    Budget, Bigger 4x4 Van

If you don't mind essentially replacing everything, a 60s or 70s rig like that could be made to work. There might be some step vans which were offered with 4x4. Some step vans use common ford or GM powerplants and transmissions. It would probably be better to go with a 90s step van with...

    Expovans Transit 4x4 Conversions

I would also be curious what the major differences are between this offering and the Quigley setup. Both seem to use a fair bit of F150 parts. I would be curious what suspension travel ratios, and spring options are available. Campers will have a fair bit of weight on the front axle, which...

New ambulance build - electrical system design

As long as you size the cables properly, you can get good charge rates between the two. Depending on alternator voltage, you may want to aim for less than 0.15V drop at somewhere around 20A. Ideally you could get 50A with that voltage drop, but its not required if you get most of your charging...

MB 1120 Coming to America! Purchase, Build and Now Travel!

Compression fittings would be okay as a temp repair, but long term they pose a failure risk in my opinion.

The glass and epoxy can be removed by heating to 600f typically, if needed. If you need to bond to oil soaked aluminum, an acid etch helps. You can also try flex lines instead of hard. However you may need more support points.

MB 1120 Coming to America! Purchase, Build and Now Travel!

For field repairs, a piece of hose slit and clamped with multiple quality clamps over the damaged area can even be semipermanent. If the damaged area is fairly small, a skilled welder with a tig machine should be able to repair the damaged area easily. Even if the damage is fairly...

MB 1120 Coming to America! Purchase, Build and Now Travel!

? Sounds like an adventure. I'll look around for carb adjustments. You probably will end up needing to adjust your main jet for altitude. It should be a pretty easy job if memory serves. Keeping the revs up is a good idea, Especially if it's cold where you are. Almost all of these air...

MB 1120 Coming to America! Purchase, Build and Now Travel!

What's the year/make? There may be an adjustment table for altitude. It may be a good idea to replace all the wear parts on the belt drive, or have spares.

Sprinter 4WD Conversion Idea, GMT-800 IFS.

That would be a fun project. Crazy lift of course, but still fun. Getting the engine to fit would be insane. The sprinter front overhang is a foot shorter than the F series at least.

Sprinter 4WD Conversion Idea, GMT-800 IFS.

Another 5k miles on the van, still working out a few bugs, mostly due to user error though. Left upper control arm had one pivot slip in a bit. Messed up my alignment, did a quick reset in the bush, but need to redo the alignment when we do a maintenance stop. If I had to do it again, I may...

    Overland Sprinter Build

My 9 foot tall van definitely need sway bars, both to prevent motion sickness and for safety. Without them the van can become a rollover hazard in emergency evasion situations. I had a friend roll over his wrangler which was top-heavy with a roof rack when merging an on ramp to the interstate...

All right, here is the semi final parts list and code for the temperature control setup. There is also a 5V zener diode, and some 20A PV panel blocking diodes to prevent back feeding on the engine pump control...

    Overland Sprinter Build

We are somewhere in central Utah. I was looking for rodent damage (long story), and spotted Broken sway bar bracket. I guess the bolt came loose, and the bending fatigued the bracket. I might get it welded if l spot an open shop. Otherwise I have a new set going to a nearby post office...

can means canbus, digital communication. If you look at the d5s main plug under the cover, there should be a pin for analog on/off. However it may not work due to custom programming.
