Hierarchy of hard sided campers that handle the snow/winter?

I can understand the sentiment that the higher R-value the better. But my research and 12+ years of first hand experience shows that the benefits must be weighed with the negatives. Our custom camper with just R7 or so and nothing more than a 1960's gravity fed LP furnace rated at just 6kBTU...

    NPS fines AWD owners…

When I see legislative changes like these I look at them as final efforts to keep dumb people from doing dumb things. Unfortunately, the next step could easily be partial or complete closure of problem areas. Regardless of how things ate defined or how informed LEOs are, its always easier and...

Which synthetic winch line for a large vehicle?

With regards to Warns "Spydura Pro", considering the oddities in their listings, I would love to see an actual spec sheet for these ropes. 7/16x100 and 3/8x100 both rated for 16,500 Until you get to the extensions.... then the 7/16 x 50 is rated at 18k, and the 3/8 is rated for just 12k...

Which synthetic winch line for a large vehicle?

Those are minimum BREAK strength. NOT working load limit strength numbers. I for one, would not place much faith on 3/8 working reliably on a 15k+ winch, considering its working load limit is just 4400lbs Generally, 7/16 synthetic is considered standard for 10k - 15k winches. Beyond that, Id...

Crew cab long bed (8ft) for overlanding??? Is this viable or realistic?

Really is going to depend upon your use case. For us, I feel this is the absolute minimum for a full time, true 4-season setup. No way, no how would a short box/bed work for us.

    The Heap. A Gen 2 Tracker/Vitara Build

This setup will include extra bulbs in the tail light housings. No silly diodes, factory harness wont be effected. And zero concern about failure on the tow rig brake system side. One large reason to go with proper gear, and not junk.

    The Heap. A Gen 2 Tracker/Vitara Build

Believe me, I went back and forth with that for quite some time. And to be truthful, I still consider it. But at the end of the day, flat towing is less complex in many ways than worrying about another item like a trailer. And flat towing puts exactly zero tongue weight on the hitch of an...

    The Heap. A Gen 2 Tracker/Vitara Build

So a while back I went down the rabbit hole with regards to supplemental braking systems. Looking at various options, they all seemed similar, and I thought I had it sorted. Until I realized that essentially none of them were progressive. Instead, ON-OFF, with calibration for max braking...

    The Heap. A Gen 2 Tracker/Vitara Build

A few small projects tackled. Dash back together, and modified to accept a few things. AuxBeam light switch/controller, VDO oil PSI gauge, and since I converted to an E-fan, manual E-fan controls took the place of the ash-tray. Its wired as such to allow manual ON and OFF. Winch was also...

    Any 7.3 gasser owners?

Yep. They might not sound like it, but they are designed for broad RPM ranges, including those higher RPMS. When our 6.2 kicks down all the way to 2nd gear for a 7-8% grade doing 60-65mph, and stars singing at 4500+ RPM the wife refers to it as "race car noises" :ROFLMAO: At first I would...

Possible new class 5 rig. Am I nut's to choose gas motor ?

Personally, If I were to ever consider a re-gear, I would never have a shop do it. Nor would I do it myself... Id be hunting factory built axles via junkyards. Simply because I will place MUCH more faith in a factory axle than a re-geared one, especially in a heavy truck that works hard. As...

Possible new class 5 rig. Am I nut's to choose gas motor ?

With regards to gearing, how hard the engine works for a given load, or how much power that gets to the ground thats required for that load, is a combination of trans gears and gearing, and axle gearing. So saying you “get more power” with lower gears is just ignorant. Depending upon trans...

    The Heap. A Gen 2 Tracker/Vitara Build

Havnt updated in a while, mostly busy work lately. But its officially driving. All lamps work, brakes, clutch, gauges, etc. Took it on a 2 mile test run today. Running, turning, and braking very well.... More to come.... And to put things into perspective.... Parked behind the...

    Changed to a Cassete Toilet

Yep. No black tank in our custom camper (by design) We started with a chemical toilet. On one of the best things we have ever done is convert to a composting toilet. Chemical toilets make the camper smell like an outhouse every time its used :ROFLMAO: Essentially zero odor with a composting...

    Mid-size vs Full-size truck setup

Something to consider... Unless you have manual front hubs (superduty), the full time front end on most trucks these days is in effect spinning the xfer case regardless of in 4wd or not. Granted, every xfer case is a bit different, but Id assume the ONLY difference between 4wd and 2wd in these...

    "Cheaper" seats for overland travel?

Yeah, cheap and quality seats really isnt going to work out well. That said, Ive had Mastercraft seats in a few rigs over the years, and if I were in the market for seats again they would be my first consideration. The Mastercraft Baja is incredibly comfortable and supportive. And they are not...
