Why not swap out the UCA's for something aftermarket while you're in there? SPC might not be a bad option if you want to stick with ball joints. Otherwise something like Camburg or Total Chaos for uniballs. They'll allow you to achieve better alignment, they are more robust, and will give you...
I'm also curious about the Shackleton's and how they ride.
And I didn't know they were doing hammer hangers now either. Those look very intriguing. I wonder if it would help with the aftershock "jitters" my truck has after some bumps. Curious to see how they work out for you.
Yeah, rubbing on the frame doesn't happen too much (at least once you have a decent alignment) I will rub at full lock under a few circumstances....tight parking space, tight turn on trails, etc. But not enough to make a huge difference. The thing that bugs me most about running 4.5"...
Today I took off my front wheel spacers. I loved the look of them with a bit wider stance in the front, and they did a great job keeping the tires off the frame. But I just couldn't get past the shaking in the steering wheel at highway speeds. It was driving me nuts. With them off the truck...
While I'm impatiently waiting for the Jeep trails to open up around here, I finally tackled a job that I've been avoiding for a while.
Project: Backup Camera Installation
Purpose: Increase safety (lots of young kids at home), avoid accidents, aid in lining up trailer hitch
Materials
-Cheap...
I put spacers on the front on mine to keep the tires off the frame at full lock. They work for that purpose, and are fine for around town and such. But at highway speeds there is a noticeable shake in the steering wheel now, even after having all tires road-force balanced again. It's a little...
Glad you got the suspension all taken care of. I kept the overload leaf in on my truck because I needed the extra lift and capacity, especially for towing. So far I don't think it's affected the ride at all.
Looking good on the truck. Glad to see another 1st gen on here.
I'm curious to see what you think of the Wheelers progressive AAL once you have it installed. It's an option I'm thinking of in the future. Right now I have the single Wheeler's AAL and it's working but I've always been curious if the 3 leaf AAL gives a plusher ride.
Just crawl under the truck before you buy one and inspect the frame. It should be pretty easy to see if there are significant issues. Unless the previous owner has been actively taking care of the frame there will likely be surface rust, which isn't a huge deal. Mine had a bunch of that. It...
I got a chance to take the truck out on some trails to test out the softer springs. My brother in-law was driving for a good portion of it, and I used a GoPro to get a view of the front suspension was doing. The #650's were more compliant for sure, but maybe too much. We heard the front tires...
What he said. There are smallish points on either side of the front that tie into the frame rails. On the passenger side is an additional larger hook for looping a tow rope around.
This is exactly why I bought them already done. I just don't have the time to mess with something like that, nor do I have the expertise. My wife needs the help with the kids when I am home, so my time working on the truck is kept to a minimum when possible.
My CVJ axles with high angle boots have been great. They do a nice job on them, and I've had no issues since install. I've probably put 15-20K on them so far, including lots of trails.
I don't have a diff drop and never really felt I needed one. I've heard mixed reviews on them anyways, so...
Are those measurements the thread showing or actual preload (free length - installed length)?
Yes I do have a winch. Total front weight of bumper and winch is probably 220 lbs, give or take a bit. Stock skid plate, no plans for full under armor anytime soon. Full-length sliders probably...
The 14" 650 springs so far have been able to get me my lift back. I'm going to wait a bit longer before I do a final adjustment and level. The springs sagged initially after the first day or two. The 700's kept my truck level easily, but they were just so rough.
Glad you found it all useful. That's why I took the trouble to document the build....so that it would hopefully help someone else as they go through the same stuff I did.
You'll really like the BFF stuff. I've been very pleased with all of mine. Well worth the money.
I've made the swap to...
Thanks, that's kind of what I was thinking. I talked to Accutune this week and provided them with all the measurements they asked for. I was hoping for more of a concrete result or recommendation from them, but it seems like their lead tech was out this week. I also put in a call to Icon to...
I'm curious to see what you think about the Shackleton leafs. With the weight you carry around they'll probably work out great. I'd love to get something like the Overland pack or the Shackleton, but I'm not going to be adding much if anymore weight than what I have now. The rear end would be...
Went ahead and had a local shop swap my 14" 700 lbs King springs for the original 13" 650 lbs Icon springs to see how the lower spring rate felt.
The ride is much better, I can run over most bumps in the road without really feeling them. I'm so used to the #700's though that the truck almost...
So with the numbers I wrote above, is it possible to tell how far I'd need to compress a 13" 650 lbs spring? I found a shop that will swap the springs for me but I'm trying to figure out a rough estimate on how far to screw the upper nut down on the lower rate (and shorter length) spring. If...
