I'm going to correct your post a little bit. It's 406 MHz beacon. Most modern units transmit GPS coordinates, and have a local 121.5 MHz homing signal, locally generated for SAR staff on the ground.
It is flat out wrong as you suggested that "they don't know crap about emergency other than a...
Thanks.
The product you linked to earlier is PLB. I would recommend that if emergency services is driving factor. I have one of those too bought in 2010, lives in my glove box, and if something really wrong, I'll activate that.
I say get both!
I have spot Trace for tracking. Never missed a beat in 2 continuous years, connected to 5v. Used for asset tracking.
I'm considering getting in reach for two way communication.
Not too sure the Garmin buy out was a good thing for consumers.
We'll see!
Thanks! Great information in your post. Yeah the Dakota thing was info from a quick and dirty Internet search. This vendor, probably looking to rip people at $180 for the Dakota.
So i'm really liking your commentary on expanding MURS.
I'm having to relearn how to navigate the FCC ECFS...
Great points, good discussion Dave.
I was digging around and I found that back in 2014, an amateur petitioned the FCC to change rule making so that licensed amateurs that also held GMRS licenses, could use part 97 devices that complied with technical specs of GRMS to be used on GMRS channels...
4x4Junkie, I agree man, but look at the market place, Motorolla sells MURS handhelds for $200, The Dakota handhelds are $180. Who the hell would pay for that?!? Especially given the alternatives?
I think we arel never gonna see a MURS type-accepted radio in mobile platform, unless the...

I was surprised by the amount of persons operating rogue FM broadcast stations!
The FCC moves quite quickly to investigate and...
I think you're 100% right on technical feasibility side. Not difficult at all. However there is a tremendous amount of overhead with bringing a product to market. I think that's what makes it a losing proposition. It would be fun to speculate on this. First would would be the price in the...
The reason you can't find any MURS mobile radios is because it would be a total marketing failure to produce one at a reasonable profit.
I've encountered lots of MURS traffic when out on the trails in California over the last few years. I have no way to prove this, but I'm gonna guess and say...
I carry two tool kits, both in hard sided cases that exactly fit their contents. One for all tire tools and repairs. And another to turn every fastener on the truck. I don't like tool rolls because they take up too much valuable space.
My thanks to Stumpalump for his awesome knowledge sharing. I followed his example to improve the efficiency of an already great product.

Welcome to the portal. Nice first post. Hate to be critical of your work, but I would never operate that thing while installed in the back of the rig. If it malfunctions, it could very quickly burn your rig to the ground.
I cut the end off the ARB power cord, use Anderson power pole connectors for attaching to truck power. I can easily reattach the factory connector if needed, but never have in three years.
Power draw is 5 amps on start.
