I would have gone with the Springbar for the fact that they are U.S made in Salt Lake City. I feel that it would make it easier to get repairs done if ever necessary. Don't get me wrong, I love the Kodiak as it is basically the same design and the company was started by a dude that use to work...
I have a love/hate relationship with the rtt. I have a Tepui Autana that has the extension with the annex. It is great for the times I stay in a different spot every night. Except when it is windy! Then it sucks! It's noisy, and very uncomfortable in the wind. I also don't like the annex...
My wife has a Tepui Autana mounted to the top of her 4Runner. Even when the annex isn't being used I find the extra setup of the overhang kind of annoying. She loves it! She also loves the annex, I don't! I prefer light and fast, she prefers the creature comforts. Granted it is really nice when...
If you want to drive older you have to expect some "upkeep" as old stuff wears out.
I will admit openly that I am a Toyota guy and will gladly pay a bit of a premium for one that is in good shape and not modified by a previous owner. My two current vehicles are both "old". 1989 Toyota 4x4 pickup...
Cutting the rear fenders and installing Bushwacker fender flares on my '77 FJ40 to fit "big 32's" back in 1990 when I was in high school. Truck has been in my family all these years and now rolls on "little 31's" and has a perfect patina. Ohhh, to have an "uncut" original Landcruiser..........
I have a 1989 pickup and have never really worried about this. I do agree with Crenshaw that you need to use good ball joints and they do only last so long if you really use your truck off-road. I too have found that my ball joints and steering components do show some wear as the year's go on...
Sorry about that Mountain Goodness, I was distracted while reading and totally missed some stuff. Good looking truck and I like where the build is going. Looking forward to seeing how it progresses.
Just for curiosity sake; your specs read that the front is locked but no mention of the rear being locked. If this is the case, why did you choose to do the front over the rear?
I really like the Lexus option as well for all the above reasons. I am seeing more of these in the backcountry and the aftermarket is really starting to notice them as well. They can be built into some really cool and capable machines. And; as a plus, they are about the same price and a lot of...
Trees, you will love your new suspension. The springs will feel pretty stiff and tall at first but they do settle over time. After following my truck around the mountains of Utah last year, my buddy went home and ordered a full Emu suspension for his 1980 Toyota pickup. He is very happy as well...
Good to see Crenshaw chiming in here as well, he has some knowledge on this era of Toyota trucks. Backyard guys like him that actually use there stuff and upgrade as they see fit are people that I always look for when I want to learn something.
And this is what I was talking about in earlier posts on this thread. Most newer drivers are afraid of the edge and take the high side because it "feels" safer. As you can see, this isn't always the case. Like I stated in earlier posts, the correct line here is on the driver side closer to the...
That's a good deal, especially if you are fine without a locker for a few years. If you are running 4:10'gears right now these will make a huge difference with 33's. I say if you have the money, pick them up run them while you do a bunch of other stuff to your truck. When you know you want a...
I love that you are building your truck on the cheap and using used parts in the process! Mine is built the same way and has taken me to a lot of good places. I have a build thread (and a few others) pertaining to the same era truck if you are interested but I don't know how to post the links to...
They do offer classes and many of the instructors offer videos. The classes are expensive though.
My best recommendation if you are new to the off-roading world or are just looking to grow your skills or are looking for trail buddies and drive a Toyota (even if you don't) get on the old...
You can't ever really know for sure. The point I was trying to make is that a lot of people jump in and drive trails that are beyond their off-road driving skills.
In the instance of the 4Runner he chose to to take a tippy, high side-hill line on this obstacle when he could have come down the...
That is indeed on Black Bear Pass. I never would have thought someone could flop their truck in that spot (I have probably run that trail over a hundred times as I used to drive Jeep Tours out of Ouray and I know the trail well). Although nothing surprises me anymore as there were two trucks...
Glad to see someone is reading it and getting something out of it. I may not post often but I will continue to as I play with things. I wish I could have found real info by people that use their trucks when I was building mine. Too many webwheelers out there giving opinions from stuff they've...
