Check EGR and Tube for blockage, the timing could be off, also a stretched timing chain or belt, if your model year has a Mass Airflow Sensor that may be suspect as well.
A trailer is a trailer, there's only so much you can do before some start looking alike. There's no foul in that.

Sure, tires are a factor. I lost 2mpg's upsizing my tires. Also your Montero is a '96, that motor is making a lot less power than it used to, and it'll take more fuel to make up the difference.
At $10/per who cares, you can use them somewhere such as garage storage or what not.
They are a bit heavy though and the size makes them a bit bulky, but they will take abuse like no other I'm sure.
In my opinion I'd get some. If they don't work out on the road, I could use them to store items...

As cool as it looks, I would get the rope out of the weather. Stow it inside and keep it clean and out of the sun.
Everything else is nicely done, and I like the truck.
