Hourless Life: Documenting Our Global Overland Adventure

I personally avoided air bags on my Africa JK for exactly the reasons you're thinking. Then I met a German couple who's been hardcore 4x4ing the world since the 80s, and they ran air bags in their 80s series LC they toured TONS of north africa in. He said it was a great solution, and only after...

Hourless Life: Documenting Our Global Overland Adventure

The easiest way to summarize: If you want a vacation, where you can camp in really nice places, see TONS of wildlife, have good infrastructure (and some adventure) - go East Africa. People do it in 2wd cars all the time, it's a cake walk now. If you want the hardest all-out adventure of your...

Hourless Life: Documenting Our Global Overland Adventure

For Southern and almost all of East Africa, visas for anyone with a US/Canadian/Australian/UK/EU passport are super, super simple. They're all issued on arrival now, no problem. West Africa is the nightmare for visas. Maybe the hardest on the planet. -Dan

Hourless Life: Documenting Our Global Overland Adventure

That is what I would do, personally. Suspension is so important to get right, choosing it before you know the final weight is like throwing a dart at the board and just hoping. There is a better way. The big downside is you're not getting the 2 inch lift from the factory, so whatever you do...

Hourless Life: Documenting Our Global Overland Adventure

Given how much weight you will carrying, I'll be shocked if it doesn't end up sitting lower than a stock JL with no mopar lift. Very, very few lifts are designed to carry the weight of full GVWR, and I don't believe it will ride well either. I learned this the hard way with the suspension on my...

    Land Rover ideas for Jeeps

So then you'd be connecting the front roll cage to the rear of the bed with your roof rack. Surely it needs more flex and independent movement than that. -Dan

    Land Rover ideas for Jeeps

Remember though at the front of a Gladiator it would only be attached to the fibreglass roof... which might tear or crack. I think we need someone with a Gladiator to put a gopro with a visible tape measure in the gap between the cab and the bed so we can see how far they move independently. -Dan

    Land Rover ideas for Jeeps

In many of those D130 photos I'm shocked to see the full-length roof rack bridge the cab and the bed. Surely that's a no-no for the independent movement required ? -Dan

    Coolest Jeep ever!

Very, very cool. Amazing how similar it is to the AEV Outpost II. I'm kind of shocked nobody has put something like this on a Gladiator frame. If I'm dreaming I'd make it 2 doors so the "box" can be bigger. Of course that's well over $150k... -Dan

Jeep just released a JL with a payload increase of 500lbs

Wow, great investigation! I'm no expert, but I think it's a combination of many factors, including brakes, frame stiffness, suspension stiffness (nobody wants a harsh ride when it's empty), things like sway and track bar stiffness and (maybe the biggest limiting factor) cooling. I like how your...

Hemi Wrangler or Gladiator or both?

Wow, AEV just posted on Facebook about the history of their HEMI converted Wranglers (TJs and JKs).. and at the end, it had this "PS, for those wondering why we haven’t been working on a HEMI V8 conversion for the JL Wrangler/Gladiator all this time…now you know! " So there you go, they really...

Hemi Wrangler or Gladiator or both?

TFL Video is online with all the details: It still only tows 3.500 They're guessing the payload is down (they don't know for sure) They're guessing pricing will be HIGH!!!! It comes with 3.73s, but you can change that with an option. Only comes with 33 inch tires. But it does have low...

Ursa Minor Camper Shell for JT Gladiator

Did John from Ursa tell you directly he won't make a top for the Gladiator, or are you just speculating? Yes, they will make one for the Bronco, but actually that's going to be "entirely new", while the Gladiator one can be substantially the same as the JL one. Like I said, Ursa won't be first...

Ursa Minor Camper Shell for JT Gladiator

Did John from Ursa Minor tell you that directly? When? Last I spoke to him (in person at SEMA 2019) (almost exactly a year ago) he and I did a lot of hand waving and talking around Gladiators, and he assured me he can and will build a top for it. As always though I'm sure it will take a while...

    Land Rover ideas for Jeeps

Of all the international overlanders I've bumped into around the world, I'd say a small percentage carry two spares. I genuinely think it's a holdover from the 80s and 90s when tires weren't nearly as tough as they are now and failures were more common. It's extremely rare to destroy a tire...

Top 5 favourite mods to my Jeep I drove around Africa

You too man! I'd love to get down that way, but the US/Canada border has been closed since March, and isn't going to open anytime soon. So no Prescott for me! I'll catch you at some point! -Dan

Top 5 favourite mods to my Jeep I drove around Africa

That's a really tough question, because I've never spent any time with a "stock" J30, and to be honest I've never spent even 10 seconds thinking about how I would build the interior if I had one. Like I've said time and time again, it depends entirely on how many people are going, for how long...
