how to design a water system that is operational below freezing

I thought I wanted a pump system when I built out my camper, but as an iterim we just went with an easy gravity feed system. After a year with it, I‘ve abandoned the pump idea. I get that many with FWCs, etc already have a pump, but not having that initially, I can’t see adding it now, both in...

I decided to build my own Pop Top camper

Good to hear! My Ovrlnd has a 10” high frontal area x a wider width since its on a Tundra. Been thinking about a wind fairing somehow. Contacted Sherpa to see if they can do something similar for Tundras. Seems like its maybe as simple as mixing and matching Tundra width components with the...

Great build — Kudos! Did you ever get a better sense of what that shorty Animas rack did (or didn’t do) for your MPG?

How Would You Spec It? Ovrlnd Camper

Forgot this. Yes, as far as the doors go. You can specify which door has the keyed latches and opens first. I wasn't aware of that and had already mounted my fridge slide on the Pside to weight balance my gas tank. Jay called and asked which door I wanted latched and I didn't think the...

How Would You Spec It? Ovrlnd Camper

I can barely see out of it at all even when all the windows are clean. The view of the road w/o the Dside window was tolerable its just that windows back there are too small IMO and high to be really useful for driving. Mirrors are fine on the road, and mirrors + backup camera are typically fine...

    Refrigerators

Got curious about the gauge issue, so pulled out some leftover pieces of ARB loom that I had trimmed for length and compared it to marked 10awg PV cable and 8awg from Powerwerx. Don’t have a … well, gauge gauge, so took a couple comparison pictures. This loom was bought about a year ago, so...

    Refrigerators

This ^^^^ except my 50qt ARB dates from 2010. Pretty much the same story. I’ve also run it in the house on freezer mode at 15° for 6 months straight recently. One thing not to forget is that you have to consider how to power it. Flooded lead acid batteries just don’t cut it. In my old Tacoma I...

Can you share that site? I may go the mattress route eventually.

I’d be happy to, but the truck is in getting gearing and lockers finished. I should have said “truck bed” not bed earlier. I mean the sill plate that has the clamps and that you bolted through. BTW, I think the close fitting mattress you’re cutting is gonna solve a lot thermal bridging in the...

Hmm … thats an interesting idea. There must be some stabized/tough versions if they use it for floors. I’ll do some research. Thanks for the suggestion.

That’ll get the job done too! Forgot I mentioned it earlier … One bad thermal bridge I cant decide what, if anything, to do about is the camper sill plate that rests on the bed. Gets really hot or cold. I have some stick on neoprene tape that would work, but not sure if I want to do it or not …

A lot of folks use a Bedrug, which is 3/4” closed cell foam on the floor and a bit thinner in the bed walls. Its quite insulating, including the tailgate, but the TG is insulated/cushioned like the walls, not the floor and deforms around any ridges/depressions on the TG with use. I’m going to...

^^^ Looks good! Are you using the rigid foam boards for the ceiling too? FWIW, I’d really encourage you to forget about Reflectix. It has very low R value. I used this stuff and its worked great for both heat and cold. Plus, pretty good price for 48”x25’. Same to work with as Relectix...

Looks like you’ve got good help … they do have child labor laws you know ? One thing I learned a bit too late on the Bedrug is that it stretches with use into voids on the tailgate surface. The Tundra has a lot of structural impressions there and with all the in and out during my build the...

    Death Valley 2017

Thanks Ace, I appreciate know this. Do you think in my rig as listed in my signature (it's also skid plated -- engine, Tcase and stock gas tank skid, with stout sliders and 2.5" lift front and 3.5 rear) I could do Mengel pass? It's definitely not my first rodeo, but it is a rig I'm still...

Also really liked the videos. Well done! I’ve roamed DV several times in my built Tacoma, but not those trails. Ive always wanted to go back and do Mengel pass and the others you show. I’m now in a built Tundra with a poptop shell (Ovrlnd). I’m curious if you could comment on the F150 with...

    Where to get it? VHB

One thing to be aware of is there are scores of 3M VHB tapes with different characteristics. You can find some good charts and comparison brochures on 3Ms site. They vary in performance around temperatures and substrate material. In the end I ended up calling 3M and got to a technical tape guru...
