The Road Chose Me: Driving a Jeep Wrangler 80,000 miles around Africa for 2 years

I have driven into African country #5, Guinea-Bissau. Amazingly, the bribery games are identical to my one day crossing of Honduras a few years back. Read all about it here: http://theroadchoseme.com/into-guinea-bissau -Dan

The Road Chose Me: Driving a Jeep Wrangler 80,000 miles around Africa for 2 years

Hey all, Thanks to my useless timing, it now rains every single day for between 8 and 10 hours. It's the hardest rain I have ever seen in my life, and is usually acomanied by a massive thunder and lightning storm. More than a few times the boom of thunder is so close it rattles the Jeep while I...

Cummins 2.8L Diesel "Repower" engine kit

Wow, this might be a dream come true for all of us that have dreamed of diesel conversions! I wonder if their "kits" will help integrate it with an OEM computer for common swaps like the TJ, and if they will go so far as to include trans adapters, engine mounts, etc. Bryon from Exploring...

    AEV Brute: The Ultimate Overlander?

Maybe I'm not explaining it well enough, but I still feel like something can't be the "ultimate something" if it's not in common use as the thing it's trying to be the ultimate at. Maybe "most exclusive" or maybe "would be good at, but nobody really does it". I agree the reason we don't see...

    AEV Brute: The Ultimate Overlander?

For some reason I was thinking about this the other day. Given it's the "ultimate" Overlander for North America - how many of them are being used as such? How many have RTTs, fridges, stoves, camping and cooking gear mounted and are regularly used for Overlanding? How many outfitted like that...

HOW-TO: DIY Mount Maxtrax on AEV Rear Carrier with Hi-Lift mount

Carrying Matrix on a JK Wrangler can be a challenge. We need them to be easily accessible and outside so they don't coat the interior in mud. Here's how I mounted mine onto my AEV Rear Tire Carrier using the AEV Hi-Lift / Pull Pall Mount. Essentially, they sit where the Pull Pall would...

Barn Door for JK factory hardtops

I think it's an awesome idea, though note that on a standard J30 pop-up, once it's in "sleeping mode" there is no air moving between the downstairs and upstairs sleeping area. Also note about 40% of the upstairs canvas can be opened as bug screen (or wide open), which is how I've been sleeping...

The Road Chose Me: Driving a Jeep Wrangler 80,000 miles around Africa for 2 years

Hey all, I've been hanging out around The Gambia River, and spotted my first Hippo! And my first Chimpanzee! ...And my first Ebola warning sign... then I got horribly sick. Damn. Read the whole story here: http://theroadchoseme.com/georgetown-and-the-river-gambia -Dan

    Rear mounted awning room?

When I eventually get my Jeep back the Yukon, I plan to do exactly the same thing. I'll make walls, and a provision for a tiny wood stove so I can get out winter camping. My awning is the ARB 1250 which is the perfect fit on the back of the Jeep - it doesn't hang over at all. -Dan

This would make someone a great "Expedition" - exploration vehicle

I didn't get it re-certified. I have no idea what's involved. Keep in mind mine is a lot more than just a J30. I have a factory Rubicon 6 speed, 13 gallon drinking water / 0.5 micron / UV treatment system with running water, cooking facilities, internal storage, sleeping for two adults, rear...

This would make someone a great "Expedition" - exploration vehicle

It sure is, and it's one of the inspirations for how I built mine - I really wanted the interior living space. Given that I did almost all the work myself, mine cost a fraction of that. -Dan

Barn Door for JK factory hardtops

Owning a J30, and now having driven it about 10k miles and slept in it for over 100 nights, I can give you some input. The J30 adds so little weight, and so little height, there is really no downside to having it on there. Interior cargo space is not changed in any way from stock. When the top...

The Road Chose Me: Driving a Jeep Wrangler 80,000 miles around Africa for 2 years

No issue finding it. Every station I've been to has had diesel and gas, and they are plentiful. I was told it would be hard to find gasoline if I got off the beaten path in Mauritania, and I know a motorbiker who went to 10+ stations a few months back trying to find it in the capital! When...

This would make someone a great "Expedition" - exploration vehicle

The Earth Roamer makes extensive changes to the factory roll bar, which has to be certified. This isn't something you can just take off the '08 and drop onto a '12+, like you could with the Ursa Minor. -Dan
