    All-Purpose Scout 80 build

Hehe, I can picture the sequence of events perfectly! The hood will stay hinged normally at the firewall. I am not sure if the latch hasn't worked in a while or what, but the truck came to me with some awesome looking old school latches that my dad thinks remind him of an International tractor...

    All-Purpose Scout 80 build

Success! As of Saturday its finally back to being a roller! Felt like it took me forever, but I got the second shock tower fab'ed and welded up, then took a deep breath and did this: Tacked the shock towers back on and checked clearances once again. At full droop on the passenger side and...

    All-Purpose Scout 80 build

That's guys, glad you are still following along. I'm hoping to motivate people to fix up more of these old scouts, showing that just because there isn't a lot of bolt on stuff available doesn't mean you can't still build something cool. I am looking I to making the inner fenders removable. It's...

12" travel, 5" in bump, 7" in droop.

Finished up the Solidworks model tonight, and it all pretty much looks the best with the shock tower where it is now on the face of the frame. Pushing the shock towers inward just means I have to notch more frame, and putting the lower shock mount on top of the knuckle doesn't eliminate the need...

Anyone make a DIY slide out?

Simplest I guess would be to bolt one of these in the back and build n top of it. You loose some height, but its a pretty tall van, right? :) Bedlises are rated for 1000+ lbs centered on the slide at full extension, but they don't extend the full length of the truck bed i.e. a bedslide for a 6'...

Hmm, so what are you thinking to do instead, work with the stock leaf springs up front?

You can get the same articulation out of a separate coil spring and shock too, but coilovers give you a much larger range of tuning options. I'm a shock dork at heart, its what I studied during college and even had an internship tuning ATV shocks for Honda, so I knew all along I'd end up with...

I should have more of an update later in the week after I sort out some more details, but here's a sneak peek:

    Tow Vehicle Recommendations

I'll be the dissenting opinion here - a Tacoma shouldn't have any problem with a 3,000 lb trailer, and WILL get you better mileage around town, not to mention being smaller for when you don't have the trailer hooked up. A decently built Tacoma could get through most moderate to difficult trails...

I'll pm you. My original plan was to use jeep or early bronco coils with normal shocks. Packaging with the narrow-ish scout axles pushed me towards coilovers, and ultimately I'm happier with it this way. Keep an eye out for used shocks, I got mine for less than half of New, they were spares...

Thanks! If you need any brackets for the 3 link and are interested in the ones I designed, let me know - I still have a set of parts kicking around here somewhere :) Yep I'm familiar with binderplanet. I have all of the accessory drive parts off the 5.7 Chevy V8 from when I pulled it out of...

    All-Purpose Scout 80 build

Cool, thanks for the link. I think the picture makes it look like the frame rails are hanging way out in front of the truck, in reality the PS box is almost completely behind the grille. I just need to notch out a little bit, shouldn't be very visible. I am planning to build a hybrid...

    Cummins or Cadillac?

6.5 TD with a NV4500 should be pretty much bolt in, right? Not the same as a 6BT though, but if we're talking easiest now ... :)

Now i see the picture, thanks. You have a build thread for that FJ40? I think that's a Scout II box? My stock one was inside the frame rail. These early Scouts have really wide frames, I'd have tire clearance and steering shaft problems trying to run the box outside. Its making a lot of...

    Cummins or Cadillac?

I'd think a 6.0 LS based (LQ9?) would be a match to the caddy engine, but probably quite a bit lighter. I wouldn't be too worried about the EFI setup, they are pretty simple. Personally would rather have a stock ECU system than an aftermarket, for reliability sake. But just for fun, I want to...

    All-Purpose Scout 80 build

Picture isn't showing up ... I'm sure its doable with scout parts, but to be honest parts support is so poor for these trucks that I feel better using a common Saginaw PS box that I can source at pretty much any auto parts store or junkyard around the country. Same goes for engine parts (TBI...

    All-Purpose Scout 80 build

That's how I got started - I wanted some rock sliders for my Toyota T100, and nobody made them. Bought a little 120V Mig welder and an angle grinder, and with the use of a tube bender that I borrowed from a buddy I went to town. You learn from every project, and (hopefully) make less mistakes as...

Why, power steering, of course :) I'll be running hydroboost brakes and power steering (all stock Chevy setup) on the scout.

I suck at doing this quickly. I feel like I overthink too much and it holds me up from just getting to work and building ****. Who cares if I have to rebuilt it later. Metal is (pretty) cheap. First shot at a shock tower - cardboard layout After a bit of work with the bandsaw and belt grinder...
