Which Caliber for a primary Hunting Rifle?

Here in the Yukon a 30/06 with 180 grain is the legal minimum to hunt Bison. (308, 303 are NOT legal as they don't have the muzzle velocity) So up here, if you want to be a "one rifle hunter" 30/06 is the end of the conversation. My Remington 700 XCR did a great job on some big moose, and...

The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon versus the Land Rover Defender

Hey Scott, Ah, I never thought about C.G. and the suspension travel the Wrangler has. That's a very good point you make. -Dan

The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon versus the Land Rover Defender

I didn't say anything about extending the wheel base. We know the D44's have a higher load rating than the Rubicon Unlimited allows, so they need to upgrade the brakes, shocks and maybe reinforce the frame a little and we'll have a higher payload with exactly the same size vehicle we have...

That, and they need to up the payload of the Unlimited, a lot. -Dan

The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon versus the Land Rover Defender

That was an interesting comparison. A few things: * I learned the JK has a wider track than the D110 - I always assumed it was the other way around. * He's right that the steering on the JK is too light/vague. It's one of my biggest complaints about mine. * Choosing not to use the lockers on...

    Homemade faucet/sink setups?

I spoke to a French couple that drove RTW in their home-built D110. They loved having a tap and running water, but said the sink was a waste of space, because they only ever filled up water bottles or pots from the tap. With that in mind, I've mounted a water tap on the roll bar of my...

Main Line Overland JK Build Thread

Do you guys know what the widest tire you can run on this rim is without spacers? I know 255s are fine, wondering how much more is OK. Thanks, -Dan

To 32 or not to 32?

I ran cheap all terrain 31x10.5r15 on my TJ from Alaska to Argentina, and I never wished for more tire. I didn't intentionally go and find the hard stuff, but I did stay off the highway and on backroads as much as humanly possible. Remember, overlanding is not offroading, it's backroading. -Dan

    Ursa Minor Pop-Top Jeep JK

Did #138 have solar panels on top, and a short ARB awning on the back by chance? I know mine is built, but I've been very delayed in picking it up. Maybe that's it... -Dan

Barn Door for JK factory hardtops

I've always thought the point of a raised roof (a la Defender 110 or Troopie) is for the extra head room it provides when in the back. If I had a raised roof, I'd for sure do what I did to my roll bar, and also move it up right into the corners. -Dan

Barn Door for JK factory hardtops

I also don't understand the point in raising the height of the roof without doing something to the roll bar - it's so squarely in the way. -Dan

HOW-TO: DIY JK Wrangler Breather Hose Extensions for $30

I did put the oem little plastic breathers on the end of my new hoses, you can see one clearly in the last photo. If you routed the new hoses into the air box you wouldn't need to re-use them. -Dan

Block heaters? Battery warmers? Oil pan heaters?

I suppose it doesn't, though I personally like to look after my vehicles as much as possible so that a) I spend less time and money on maintenance while I have it and b) I can keep it for a very long time, and spend my money on more important things. -Dan

Block heaters? Battery warmers? Oil pan heaters?

I shudder to think of the damage you were doing to your engine when you cold started it at -40. It's often not about if the engine will start, it's about if you want it to. -Dan

The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon versus the Land Rover Defender

Indeed, though note I said "North America" because in Canada we can't have them until they're 15 years old, which puts them out of the race, IMHO. -Dan

The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon versus the Land Rover Defender

It's also not a contest because it's simply not possible to get a newish Defender in North America. If anyone thinks a 70's or 80s defender is a competitor for a 2010+ Wrangler Rubicon, they're not living the real world. -Dan
