Thanks for the reply Scott,
Sorry if my question sounded like I want to continue the flame war, I was asking honestly.
I agree 100% that weight is the most important factor.
My little TJ didn't have a single mechanical issue in 40k miles from Alaska to Argentina, and I honestly believe it's...
Which brings us back full circle to the thread title:
How does one modify the JKU to bring it closer in terms of durability and reliability to the Land Cruiser?

I just took it for a 20 minute drive, and I seriously thought about turning on the camera while it was idling in the garage :)
It's coming together now - we spent 10 hours today pulling wiring looms and chasing an electrical gremlin that turned out to be a short in the electric compass.
Who...
No spacers for me, I'll be running skinny (255) tires.
I want steel rims so I can bash them back into shape in the event of damage, or even get them welded.

Of course, getting the harmonic balancer off to cut the ring off and re-weld it is easier said than done!
Check it out:
I think that crossmember might be getting a trim, for the 4th time :)

I didn't even know small meters existed that can do that - and it turns out my friend here has one! Thanks!
After lots of careful inspection, and talking to Shawn at jdjeeps.com at length, who was extremely helpful, we've figured out the crank reluctor ring we put on the harmonic balancer is...
IT'S ALIVE!
The Mercedes diesel is running like a champ, though the Jeep computer is obviously very upset - the dash is lit up like a Christmas tree.
I have not driven it anywhere yet, though I probably will in a day or two.
The engine sounds great - like it's way bigger than 3.0. Very smooth...

Things are coming together really well, I absolutely can not wait to drive my Jeep.
All the details on the Mercedes...
I'm just about to turn the key on my OM606 JKUR.
We made the engine entirely mechanical using the injection pump from the earlier OM603, because computer stuff for these engines is very hard.
The odd person in Europe has figured out how to delete the immobilizer, but as yet the info doesn't...

Extending the breather hoses on the JK is a must - Here's how I did it for less than $30 http://theroadchoseme.com/diy-jeep-wrangler-jk-breather-hose-extensions
When you install the snorkel, you should silicone up the breather holes in the bottom of the JK airbox too.
Other than that, there is...
Very cool the Hyland rivers were named for your grandfather and father. Tons of my friends have paddled the length of those rivers - it's about a two week trip - and I've tooled around in that area some looking for moose and Caribou. I especially love where the Hyland strikes off from the...
