    72 IH + ‘85 Alaskan = Questionable Judgment...

I love old trucks, so it was an easy choice. That, and the truck itself only set me back $2500.

Those tires and their split rims are long gone, given to a buddy in Glenrock, WY. Stay tuned, we're getting to that point... Cruising speed is 65-70 on flat ground in calm conditions.

Next trip to Wheaterville, we fitted the plywood spacer: And mocked up the box placement: It was getting a lot easier to see the objective at this point.

Back at home, I decided to liberate the cabling I wanted to use from battery to inverter/charger from its covering: This was a castoff from my oilfield days, and it was a PITA to extract that cable, but a couple beers later, I had ‘er licked: It’s 2/0, IIRC.

And then a really big day arrived: We got to this point and realized somewhere our height measurements weren’t right, and we needed 3/4” at the top of the boxes and below the cabover. Harry suggested a sheet of green-treat 3/4 plywood as a spacer, noting a couple fringe benefits: 1...

This is the skid plate/support for the dumpster-find 19-gallon F350 auxiliary tank, which I coated with a POR-15-type product from KBS: I was incredibly lucky to find this tank, because it fits the space on the rear of the truck, it will allow a usable range, and it was free. It, and its...

So I kind of forgot about this thread, while I was doing this- …among other things. Time to get back to it, then, if anyone’s still tuned in.

    Outfitter or Hallmark?

These horror stories about Outfitters campers make me glad I didn’t buy one ten years ago when I was considering it.

Best place to look for used campers

Search Tempest is how I found my Alaskan on Craigslist in Portland, OR. It worked really well. WTW is another good resource, especially if you enable email notifications of campers for sale. I still receive several a day because I’m too lazy to disable them.

    Electric Chain Saw???

I bought a Milwaukee M18 chainsaw primarily to bring camping inside one of the side boxes. After I saw how much B&C oil it leaked everywhere it went (I named it the Torrey Canyon), I sold it and bought a 20V DeWalt after checking with a buddy on how oil tight his was. So far so good: only the...

How Do You Store Your Garbage?

Thanks for the ideas & info everyone. I looked into the Trasharoo, but then I realized that space is ocupado, taken up mostly by a Jerry can holder (my spare wheel bolts onto the carrier at the front). I'll check out that link for more ideas.

How Do You Store Your Garbage?

I hope this is the right forum for this query; it is a sort of storage problem, after all. A friend and I spent 2 1/2 years building my IH/Alaskan camper, sweating a myriad of details like having enough gas (three tanks, two original IH tanks with stock selector valve, third is a transfer...

full size frame twist and implications to campers

Saw this on a truck at the Overland Expo and took a pic for future reference: My camper frame is attached to the truck frame with u-bolts, which I’m starting to believe to be an inferior arrangement for off roading. Someday I may have to modify mine with that mounting shown above.

Another safety best practice would be to leave the guard on your side grinder. I can’t count all the ones I’ve seen without guards on them, and I think that’s nuts. I’ve never felt limited by the guards on side grinders in the 25 years I’ve been using them.

Sound damping a vehicle, the right way

I covered both floor, ceiling, and back of the cab on my ‘72 IH 1310 with Dynamat and Dynaliner, and am tickled pink with the results: it’s quieter than my ‘08 Dodge 2500 inside. Could it have been made quieter with the methodology described above? Maybe so, but I don’t feel like any improvement...
