As an 80 "fanboy" :) I agree with LandCruiserPhil, that based on the OPs description and not knowing him personally, I would think the 100 series is the right choice.
But a few more points to consider. Many have mentioned the 80's being "long in the tooth" and needing a higher level of upkeep...
That's a kind thing to say. I try to take care of my cruiser and do my best to use good parts. But it's still a well used truck and far from pristine. But like most cruisers, it just works really well.
.
Best of luck on your cruiser build when you find one. Be sure to share your progress!
You're forgetting about the Tepui Kukenam Baja Series (Ayer size available too). It's a bit larger than these and can be done with a mesh canopy or a lightweight nylon canopy if you're wanting something lightweight. Having seen all of these firsthand it would be my top choice hands down for a...
I love the 100 series but no way I'd say they are a big leap in build quality. My 22 yr old 80 series is still tight. Build quality is excellent and I dare say that the 80 is more durable than a 100 series. Nearly identical rear ends, but if we're just talking strength and durability the...
Here's what you got....
1993-1997 FZJ80 and LX450 are nearly identical and most parts are all interchangeable, with the exception of some trim and body stuff. These have the inline 6cyl. Factory lockers were optional.
1998-2007 UZJ100 and LX470 are also similar but some more noteable...
Lousy pics but I whipped out a simple fuel can basket last night. I have a trip coming and needed a better way to carry extra fuel. Have debated a second swingout but didn't really want to go that route. Solution? Single can holder added to the existing swingout. It meant moving the hilift...
I should point out the nearly all Australian brand tents are also made in China.
.
As has been mentioned, quality control is the key. Tepui, for example, which is also manufactured in China, has an excellent reputation for quality. Much of that is a result of them being the only brand that I'm...
the iKamper is definitely not was I would call a "lightweight". I was able to see the prototype first hand during the Outdoor Retailer show. Some interesting ideas and I will give them credit for exploring unique design rather than just playing copycat like so many other brand tents. There...
I've been wheeling with the new Trail Tailor control arms for a while now but never had a chance to really check clearances etc. Found a ramp near my work to check everything. The new control arms are great. Zero binding and the poly bushings aren't being stressed at all since the Johnny...
I'm not sure about optioning the luxury mattress at initial purchase. I'll have to check on that. My guess would be no, since it's kinda like the grey and black covers. They are all packaged with the tent so changing one out for the other would mean unpacking the tent, then packing it up...
As I mentioned, I was in Santa Cruz last week and was able to meet with the Tepui team for a while. Lots of good ideas flowing over there and some exciting new stuff coming. I happened to show up as they were filming a video for a new announcement. :)
@DoorDing and anyone else considering the new Luxury Mattress. I was at Tepui HQ on Friday and was able to check out the luxury mattress first hand. It is without question a better mattress than the standard ones and is definitely more firm than the standard one. The foam used is a higher...
